The City of Newton in 2022 has had the most new housing units added (36 so far) in any year since 2017. Harvest Pointe senior multi-family development began construction in 2022, while construction is underway at Summer Crossing, Sand Creek Station (fourth addition), Autumn Glen and Fox Ridge.

Photographs taken by Jim W. White II and Shelly Wonders earned top prizes in the 2022 Best of Newton photo contest. A judging panel selected winning entries in two categories that attracted 98 different entries from 32 photographers. White’s photo “Fetching a Ball from a Wheat Field” took the top prize in the open category, while Wonders earned top prize in the category of Downton Newton photos with “5th St. Starbursts,” a black-and-white picture taken at the intersection of Main and Fifth streets.

The City Commission this month transferred ownership of two City-owned properties to the Newton Land Bank, marking the first properties to become part of the program, which was established in 2021. The properties, located at 118 S. Kansas St. and 324 E. 11th St., will be able to be sold through the Land Bank for infill development.

Tourism Economics, an Oxford Economics Company, conducts an economic impact study of tourism in Kansas using the most current data available. Items celebrating the City of Newton's Sesquicentennial are available for purchase and can make great holiday gifts. Limited quantities of sleeves of three golf balls and Christmas ornaments with the Newton150 logo are available while supplies last. Sleeves of golf balls are $11 plus tax, while ornaments are $4 plus tax. Two styles of t-shirts -- one with the Newton150 logo and one saying "Waiting On Trains Since 1872" -- also are available for $20 plus tax. Purchases may be made at the Utility Billing Department at City Hall.

The annual Parade of Lights, sponsored by the Newton Lions Club, is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 1, on Main Street in downtown Newton. Join us as as we kick off the Christmas season with hot chocolate, cookies, and photos with Santa after the parade. Come early or stay late to shop in our downtown businesses.

Get into the holiday spirit with The Five Places of Christmas in Newton and North Newton on Saturday, December 3. The annual event allows visitors to see five attractions decorated for the holidays with additional treats, refreshments, giveaways, and activities. The Five Places of Christmas – Carriage Factory Art Gallery, Warkentin House Museum, Kauffman Museum, Harvey County Historical Museum and the Goerz House at Bethel College – will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
