In June, we recognize Elder Abuse Awareness Month and World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a time dedicated to raising awareness about elder abuse and educating older adults, caregivers and communities about risks and the various resources available to help protect vulnerable adults. |
One of the most significant threats – accounting for more than 2,000 reports to DCF’s Adult Protective Services in State Fiscal Year 2025 – is financial exploitation. We had the opportunity to speak with Pete, a recently divorced man targeted by a financial scammer.
Pete thought he was getting to know someone named “Emily.” Instead, “Emily” was a thief who stole money from him through a cryptocurrency romance scam.
Although Pete wasn’t able to recover the money he lost, Adult Protective Services and law enforcement helped him recognize the scam before he suffered additional financial harm.
View his story here.
In addition to sharing Pete’s story and resources, our Adult Protective Services team and community partners have been touring Kansas presenting on financial exploitation and durable powers of attorney. Thank you, Pete, for sharing your story, and thanks to everyone who joined us for these educational opportunities!
The Kansas Department for Children and Families Office of Background Investigations is moving its background check request process online to better serve Kansans and improve efficiency.
Beginning June 1, requests for background checks against the Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry and the Adult Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation Central Registry must be submitted through a new online portal.
Paper forms are no longer accepted. Beginning July 1, requesters will also no longer be able to submit these requests through email.
After submitting a request, responses will still be sent via encrypted email.
The $10 fee will still apply for certain requesters for the Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry. The Adult Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation Central Registry will remain free of charge.
