National Foster Care Month is a time to reflect on the realities of foster care and the work being done in Kansas to support youth and strengthen families.
There is a common misconception that children removed from their homes for safety reasons are immediately placed in foster care, but in reality, case management providers in Kansas first seek to place the child with a relative or non-related kin such as an aunt, grandparent, adult cousin, teacher, coach or family friend whom the child already knows. This approach helps maintain the child’s routines, traditions and family connections while addressing the safety concern.
The ultimate goal for a child in foster care is permanency, ending the need for foster care services. Case planning conferences bring together the family, child, case management provider, a neutral third party and support persons to discuss progress, concerns and steps toward permanency.
|
Our agency and partners work together to provide resources that engage youth in making their own decisions, support families as they work toward permanency and help foster parents maintain safe placements.

Zeb, a Fort Scott high schooler, is developing job skills through DCF’s Work Based Learning Program, part of Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) for youth with disabilities.
At the Fort Scott National Historic Site, Zeb assists visitors at the front desk. His specialist, Ken Breeden, recognizes Zeb’s strong communication, confidence and professionalism. This demonstrates the value of his work-based learning for real-world experience. Congratulations, Zeb!
Know someone who might benefit from Pre-ETS services?
