The Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) is advising households with an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, also called the Kansas Benefits Card, to be alert for skimming devices and to take steps to protect their benefits.
DCF strongly encourages cardholders to use the free ebtEDGE mobile app from Fidelity Information Services (FIS), or the ebtEDGE Cardholder Portal at ebtEDGE.com, to monitor their account and safeguard their benefits.
The following features are available:
-
Freeze your EBT card when not in use. Unfreeze the card when ready to make a purchase.
-
Block out-of-state and online transactions. You must unblock these transactions to make out-of-state or online purchases.
-
Regularly change your four-digit PIN. Use number combinations that are not easy to guess (avoid birthdays or anniversaries).
-
Monitor your account regularly. Check your transaction history for unfamiliar activity and sign up for alerts if available.
-
Inspect card readers before use. Look for signs of tampering like loose, damaged, or otherwise suspicious parts.
-
Beware of phishing attempts. Never share your card information or PIN by phone or text message. DCF and FIS will never call or text to ask for your card number or PIN.
Please note:
Third-party EBT apps do not provide the same protection features as ebtEDGE.
The ebtEDGE app is available in the Google Play Store and in the Apple App Store.

If Your EBT Card Is Affected
If DCF is able to identify that your EBT card has been affected by skimming, you will receive a notice in the mail. Cardholders with Self-Service Portal (SSP) accounts will also get a text message or email prompting them to review a message in the portal. Affected cardholders will receive a new EBT card, also known as a Kansas Benefits Card, mailed to their home.
If you notice unauthorized purchases, change your card’s PIN immediately and request a replacement card using the ebtEDGE app, at ebtEDGE.com, or by calling 1-800-997-6666.
Please Remember
Effective December 2024, federal funds are no longer available to replace stolen SNAP and TANF benefits and state funding is not available to reimburse stolen benefits. This means DCF cannot replace benefits or reimburse Kansas cardholders for stolen SNAP and TANF benefits.
