Help Available to Employees to Protect Yourself from Fraud
Fraud during January isn't limited to stolen credit cards; all types of fraud experience an uptick during this month. Fraudsters target financial accounts, including FSAs, HRAs, and HSAs, attempting to change account details and make unauthorized claims and transactions.
While it's impossible to eliminate all risks, there are measures you can take to help protect your accounts:
- Stay Alert with Notifications
Make sure you've opted in to all available communications, both mobile and email. If you notice changes in your account data followed by a request for an outbound payment, report it immediately.
If you spot any suspicious activity, act immediately to correct or remove false information from your account. Quick action can prevent unauthorized payments and help recover funds if a payment has already been made.
- Enhance Security Features
Consider using additional fraud prevention tools, such as delaying direct deposits and bill payments after changing your email or phone number, and setting limits on distributions.
Treat the risk management procedures for your consumer-driven healthcare accounts with the same importance as your bank’s procedures. Regularly update your login credentials and verify your contact information (email, phone, address, and direct deposit details) to keep your account details current.
 Help Available to Employees
Employee Assistance Program (EAP) has resources to help with life issues.
- The EAP offers a wide range of services at no cost to employees and members of their household, including: work guidance support, lifestyle questions/issues, financial guidance and much more.
- For employers with 50+ employees, formalized training programs are also provided either virtually or in-person.

Important Reminders about Flexible Spending Accounts
Rollover Provision
-
Dependent Care FSA
- Members who had a Dependent Care FSA in 2024 have until March 16, 2025 to incur expenses and file them for reimbursement from their Dependent Care Account.
- There is no rollover provision for the Dependent Care Account.
-
HealthCare FSA or a Limited Purpose FSA
- Members who have a HealthCare FSA or a Limited Purpose FSA in 2024 AND continue to have one in 2025 will have a rollover provision of up to $640 of any unused funds from 2024 to their 2025 account.
- Members who have a HealthCare FSA or a Limited Purpose FSA in 2024 and DO NOT continue to have one in 2025 will have 90 days in 2025 to file for reimbursement of expenses incurred during 2024 while the benefit was active.
-
A member’s debit card is deactivated if they terminate employment or do not keep an active FSA account. For run-out claims they will need to file claims via the NueSynergy portal or submit them manually for reimbursement.
Filing Claims for Reimbursement
When filing claims for reimbursement it’s important to note, the regulations requiring documentation of eligible expenses are outlined by the IRS, and the SEHP and NueSynergy must follow those guidelines.
After using a debit card for expenses an employee may be asked to provide the required documentation to substantiate the claim. Failure by the employee to provide the documentation could result in the debit card being deactivated.
-
Dependent Care FSA: for reimbursement, the information must include:
- Dates of service
- Dollar amount
- The provider’s name of daycare service.
- Downloading a copy of the invoice from your provider is the simplest
-
HealthCare or Limited Purpose FSA: for reimbursement there are also required pieces of information an employee must provide.
- In nearly all cases the employee will find all necessary information on their Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from Aetna, BCBSKS, Delta Dental, or Avesis or Surency.
- An employee can download their EOBs from all vendors and then upload a copy into their NueSynergy portal for reimbursement.
Visit the SEHP website for additional information about FSAs.
