Herron School of Art & Design Faculty and Alumni Featured in August Shows

The Biennial Faculty Show will kick off the fall gallery season August 8 at Herron School of Art and Design in Eskenazi Hall's main galleries. This year's exhibition will be an exercise in eclecticism with faculty members exhibiting from a variety of departments. All tenured and tenure-track faculty, lecturers and program technicians had an open invitation to participate.

Also opening in the Marsh Gallery August 1 is Print or Die, an annual print exchange created and curated by Dominic Senibaldi (M.F.A. '13 in Printmaking). Print or Die will showcase works from two years of the exchange, illustrating ideas behind the print exchange culture and its importance in contemporary printmaking. Artists from coast to coast participate.

Also opening August 1 in the Basile Gallery is 316, a thesis exhibition by Eric D. Johnson, (M.F.A. '14 in Printmaking). Rounding out the month, opening August 29 and continuing through September 19 will be solo shows by alumnus Phil O'Malley (B.F.A '07) in the Marsh Gallery and Assistant Professor in Furniture Design Katie Hudnall in the Basile Gallery.

National Study Suggests People Involved Professionally in the Arts are Happier

Studies of happiness and well-being suggest that participating in the arts should lead to increased life satisfaction, self efficacy, "flow" like experiences, and an overall improved outlook on life. A new study by the Curb Center for Art, Enterprise, and Public Policy at Vanderbilt University, supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), confirms this relationship: among college students and the general public, actively making or presenting art is related to increased feelings of well-being and a more positive social outlook. Based on analysis of more than 2,000 respondents to the 2009 Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAPP) survey (the only year the survey asked about general life satisfaction), research director Steven Tepper found that arts graduates who currently make and perform art professionally are happier than those who are not professional artists. If you train to be an artist, generally you will be happier if you actually get a job as an artist. But what of arts graduates who make or perform art as an avocation, outside of work, are they happier than former art students who have largely stopped making art? Surprisingly, the answer appears to be "no." The research finds that former arts students receive no additional boost in life satisfaction when they continue to make and perform art in ones spare time. The key issue here may be the amount of time available for the person to meet their own artistic goals. There are indications that former arts students are happier when they continue to do their artistic work outside of their regular jobs, but only when they feel they have adequate time to do that work at the desired level. Signal Box Art Project Wins Award

For the past two years, Foundation East has commissioned local (Indianapolis) artists to create art on traffic signal boxes in and around the Irvington area. The 20 uniquely painted boxes are loved by those in the community who appreciate that art can be experienced by bike, foot, or car. The project has won first place in the category of Best New Public Art in NUVO's 2014 Best of Indy Reader's Choice Poll. IMPD officer Shane Foley has noticed the correlation between the themes represented on the signal boxes and the characteristics of the neighborhood that houses them.  "The boxes suggest life, motion, activity, which is what we want people to know about the area," he said. "There's life and activity here, and people who care." Eastside artists who developed the themes and painted the boxes include the Department of Public Words, Morgan Hauth, Shelby Kelley, Erin Kelsch, Andrew Severns, and Rita Spalding. TAF Mural Project Underway in Kentland

The Tippecanoe Arts Federation (TAF) has announced the work on the Kentland mural site is underway. The mural is located at the Newton County Fairground's Domestic Arts Building. Indiana artist Matt Evans has worked with the Domestic Arts Committee to develop the concept to be used for the assembled mural. Funding for the Mural Initiative in Newton County is in part from a grant from the Jasper and Newton County Community Foundations. Matt has a Master's degree in Graphic Design and Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts. He composed his first portrait at the age of nine and has been sharing his artistic talents for more than 40 years. He has had a variety of careers from designing t-shirts to teaching art classes and painting murals on commission. His favorite art styles are Realism and Beyond Realism. "We are extremely happy to bring this program to Newton County," said Tetia Lee, TAF Executive Director. "The Domestic Arts Committee and artist Matt Evans have been a sincere pleasure to work with and we look forward to the mural's completion." The Mural Initiative is a collaborative educational outreach program that serves area at-risk and under-served youth populations. The three primary objectives of this multi-faceted program are to: beautify community areas vandalized by graffiti, visually promote the clear benefit of arts in the community, and provide a life-long positive impact on all project participants. USArtists International Now Accepting Online Applications

USArtists International, a program of Mid Atlantic Arts, announces that program guidelines and online applications are now available for the 2015 USArtists International program. The program provides support for American dance, music, and theater ensembles and solo artists from across the country who have been invited to perform at significant international festivals and, new this year, performing arts markets anywhere in the world outside the United States and its territories. The application deadline for the first of three grant rounds of the 2015 program is Friday, September 5, 2014 for projects taking place between November 1, 2014 and October 31, 2015. Khaos Theatre Seeks Original Play Submissions, Indianapolis, IN
Khaos Theatre calls for playwright submissions for the First Annual Dionysia New Play Competition. Playwrights are invited to submit five page excerpts of full-length plays to be performed at the competition. The winning playwright will have their full-length play produced during Khaos Company Theatre's 2015 season and get a free 2015 Season Pass to all company shows. Call for Artists, Port Everglades Entryway Project, Fort Lauderdale, FL
In partnership with Port Everglades, located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the Broward Cultural Division's Public Art & Design Program is seeking to commission one or more artists, or artist teams, to design, fabricate, and install site specific artwork for the North security checkpoint entry to Port Everglades and at specific locations along Eisenhower Boulevard. One of three Port entry points, this entryway is located south of the entrance to the Greater Fort Lauderdale / Broward County Convention Center. This artwork project is part of the overall relocation of the security checkpoint location on Eisenhower Boulevard. The function of the security checkpoint is to house trained security officers who will admit only persons with port business, port identification and ensure no weapons are brought into the port. This call for artists is open to all professional artists, 21 years-of-age or older; residing in the United States who have completed a minimum of five public art projects with a budget of $25,000 or more, and have demonstrated experience completing and coordinating exterior public art installations with construction project managers, and related contractors, engineers and architects. Call for Entries, Work Inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe, Indianapolis Museum of Art
Georgia O'Keeffe was inspired by the culture and beauty of the American Southwest. How might O'Keeffe's work inspire your students? The Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) invites preschool through 12th grade teachers to share their students' responses to the work of Georgia O'Keeffe, which will be featured at the IMA in the upcoming exhibition Georgia O'Keeffe and the Southwestern Still Life. The featured exhibition will be at the IMA from November 2, 2014 through February 15, 2015, and will include still life compositions created by O'Keeffe and her contemporaries from the early 20th century through the 1950s. As part of the exhibition, student artwork will be on display in the Inspired by the Southwest gallery.  Entries are open to all students in Indiana, preschool through 12th grade. The Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library Director of Advancement will be responsible for leading the Vonnegut Library development / advancement program, and ensuring consistency of the advancement message as part of communications for the library. Music Director, Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra, Grand Junction, CO
The Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra welcomes applications for the position of Music Director for the 2016-2017 season.
