Celebrate summer with your favorite outdoor activities

Welcome back
The temperature is rising, the fish are biting and the wildflowers along the hiking trails signal that we’re ready for a wide array of outdoor activities at Indiana's 24 state parks and 8 reservoirs.

Welcome Back Weekend is May 3-5.

This is the perfect time to plan for a weekend of wildlife watching, a night by a crackling campfire, and a day or two to relax and escape a hectic world without traveling far from home.

Some activities during the weekend include:

• Morel Mushroom Festival at Brown County State Park
• A “Hound Hike” at Shakamak State Park
• Geocaching and evening music at Harmonie State Park
• Girl and Boy Scout Badge Day at Monroe Lake
• Outdoor cooking workshop at Ouabache State Park
• A look back at construction of the dams and reservoirs at Salamonie and Mississinewa Lakes.

Check out Welcome Back Weekend programs at your favorite property.

What’s new in State Parks and Reservoirs this summer?
Ever drive through a property and see something new? Every property makes changes and improvements each year. Some are big, like the new aquatic center at Prophetstown State Park, and some are less visible, but still important, like improvements to the campground electrical service at Potato Creek State Park. Check out highlights for your favorite property

SPR go

SPR GO! Two ways to get outside for less

• Get your annual pass, camping or an Inn gift certificate, state park pool pass and much more in our SPR Go! Value Pack. It’s a great way to save on your summer vacation.
• Visit a state park or reservoir close to home this summer. There’s one within an hour of nearly every Hoosier. Use the Indiana Recreation Guide or DNR Recreation Finder to pick your new place to play.

Remember your Lake Permit

All motorized and non-motorized boats moored or operating on state park, state forest or reservoir lakes in Indiana must have a lake permit displayed on the boat. Pick up a permit ($22 motorized, $5 non-motorized) at any State Park or Reservoir office, at the DNR Customer Service Center or online at www.innsgifts.com. Make sure you’re ready for summer boating.

Indiana Heritage Corps: A great way to spend a season

There are a few open summer Indiana Heritage Corps positions, and applications are now being accepted for the fall session, which lasts from early September through mid-November. The IHC is a part of Americorps, and members receive a living stipend and housing on property as they help construct and repair hiking trails. If you’re interested, email IndianaHeritageCorps@dnr.IN.gov

Keep out EAB

Bring firewood debarked, buy it stamped and burn it all. Wood should be from home with bark removed, purchased with a state or federal compliance stamp, or scrap kiln-dried construction lumber. It's likely that all infestations of emerald ash borer have come through firewood.

Let’s move: Start the 2013 Fitness Challenge during Welcome Back Weekend

Moving is good for us all and what could be better than moving along a path or creek at your favorite state park or reservoir? This summer, you can walk, ride, paddle or swim your way to better health and be entered in a contest to win special prizes, too.
