On no other day does the State Library count on its volunteers more than the last Saturday of September each year when we host the Indiana Vision Expo - the Midwest's largest trade show for individuals with vision loss. Since 2006, the Vision Expo has connected people with vision loss and their family and friends to assistive technology vendors and low-vision service providers.
This will be the second year that the State Library has partnered with the Indy VisionWalk. The two groups are hoping for an event even larger than last year when over 1,000 people attended the events.
Volunteers Catalog Essential Collections
Recently, the Catalog division of the Indiana State Library relied on three outstanding volunteers to catalogue library materials to professional standards. This method of describing our materials helps patrons see what our library has to offer, both in our Evergreen Indiana catalog, and via Worldcat.
Susanne Wells has helped out with several different projects in the Catalog Division. She began by doing retrospective conversion of the old federal documents, known by the State Library as the p.d. (public documents) collection to the SuDoc (Superintendent of Documents) classification. She has also cataloged manuscript collections and several dozen broadsides, which are historic posters.
Brianne Hagen is our expert on cataloguing broadsides. She has also cataloged large print books for the Talking Book & Braille Library collection, and has assisted in the cataloging of many pamphlets, as well as books in the Indiana Collection.

Vanessa D’Amico has worked on multiple projects as a Catalog Division volunteer. She has cataloged many children’s books from our unique Harriet and Richard Thomas collection. She also catalogued many pamphlets in our collection, as well as books in the Indiana Collection.
All three volunteers have catalogued state documents and have aided with the cataloging of both Audio/Visual and digital materials. Many of these digital state documents are available online. All of these tasks have led to more information and descriptions of our collections being available to the public.

Volunteer at the Indiana State Library
The Indiana State Library welcomes those who are interested in sharing their time and talents through volunteering. Volunteering provides a friendly environment in which volunteers work alongside staff to provide enhanced access to Library collections, services, and programs.
Volunteers have the satisfaction of helping to complete projects that could not be done without them. Many of the projects involve working with unique historical materials and unusual collections which are held in the Library and provide an opportunity to contribute to the preservation of Indiana history and enhance access to Indiana's heritage.
