OP-ED FROM CJI DIRECTOR DEVON MCDONALD |
Violent crime is a social ill that negatively impacts millions of people every year in the U.S. While considerable resources are devoted to crime prevention at the local, state and federal levels—and justifiably so—it’s important that we do everything in our power to lift up those impacted by violence. Before being named Director of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, I managed the state’s Victim Compensation Program and worked with hundreds of crime victims. Two things became apparent after listening to their stories: (1) every violent crime has a tangible and intangible cost and (2) the impact of violence can be generational and extend beyond the individual to friends, family and communities. |

ROLLING OUT THE RED CARPET FOR INDIANA’S TRAFFIC SAFETY ALL-STARS
Last month, CJI was proud to roll out the red carpet in recognition of Indiana’s 2022 Traffic Safety All-Stars! To be named an all-star, an officer must have made at least 20 OWI arrests and participated in one of the state’s enhanced enforcement campaigns in 2021. In other words, these officers all went above and beyond last year – picking up extra shifts on nights, weekends and holidays – to keep Indiana’s roads and communities safe. New this year, CJI introduced a special distinction to recognize some of the state’s top performers, or MVPs: The Golden Glove Award. In all, 62 officers were recognized by Director McDonald who had a combined total of nearly 3,000 OWI arrests. It was an honor to recognize their life-saving efforts. |
