ICRC Celebrates Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Events

INDIANAPOLIS-The Indiana Civil Rights Commission (ICRC), Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Indiana Holiday Commission (MLKIHC), Indiana Black Expo, Inc., and AFSCME Local 725 will host the State of Indiana's Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Indiana Holiday Celebrations at three separate events, beginning Wednesday, January 15.

“Dr. King left us too soon, but not before imparting a powerful message of hope for a more just world for all people. It is so crucial to join together as One Indiana and create a fellowship to learn, grow, and empower all to do great things. We must learn from our predecessors and use their light and legacy in order to share our own,” said Governor Eric J. Holcomb.

On Wednesday, January 15, at 6:00 p.m. a Wreath Placing Ceremony will be held at the Indiana War Memorial: Soldiers and Sailors Monument, alongside the Iota Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Families are invited to “Share the Light” of King’s legacy by participating in a candlelight ceremony calling for unity across Indiana and the nation.

Thursday, January 16, ICRC will host the 29th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Indiana Holiday Celebration at the Indiana State House at 12:00 p.m. The day’s events consist of the Governor and other elected officials in attendance to honor Dr. King, a student youth summit and acknowledging five individuals with leadership and service awards for their tireless contributions in the state of Indiana.

Then, on Monday, January 20, we continue the time-honored tradition of rolling up our sleeves to serve in the legacy of Dr. King during the 9th Annual Dr. King Day of Service. Registration begins at 9 am at the Watkins Park Family Center.

All events are free and open to the public. 

“These three days of celebration have been designed to promote and strengthen family bonds, unity and peace in our diverse communities throughout the state of Indiana,” said Greg L. Wilson, ICRC, executive director.
