Accepting Nominations for the Serve Indiana Awards for Excellence

We are proud to announce the annual Serve Indiana Awards for Excellence. These awards recognize the outstanding volunteer contributions to causes that include health care, neighborhood revitalization, youth and senior activities, the arts, education, justice, housing, nutrition and social services. If you know someone that should be recognized as a volunteer in one of our eight categories (Corporate Service, Exemplary Service Learning, Faith-Based Volunteer, Lifetime Achievement, National Service, Volunteer Program, Volunteerism, and Youth Volunteer), please nominate them!

Farewell Sharvonne Williams!

Serve Indiana would like to thank Sharvonne Williams for her nearly two years of service!  Sharvonne has accepted a position with the MLK Community Center as Director of Operations in Indianapolis, her last day with Serve Indiana will be June 5th, 2017.  Sharvonne has been a strong member of our team exhibiting a passion for service, volunteerism and improving her community.  She has built strong relationships with her Program Directors and other community partners that has helped create a strong Serve Indiana!  Her dedication will be missed but we wish her the best as she moves on to a new adventure.  Please send your thoughts and thank you to Sharvonne before she leaves!

Day of Service Grants Recap 

The goal of Mini-Grant program is to demonstrate the power of service as a solution to community needs. Serve Indiana encourages Day of Service projects that (1) demonstrate community connections and use of local resources, (2) build capacity of local volunteer centers and national service programs through regional networking and co-planning of activities, and (3) increase national service participant and volunteer understanding and commitment to national service and volunteerism.

Spiceland Cares Day

This past cycle, Spiceland Cares Day engaged individuals and families as they spruced up the town of Spiceland with painting projects, cleaning sidewalks, planting flowers and partnering with Habitat for Humanity and local churches and troops to build a wooded stage, adding railings to a park bridge and a wall build.

Steuben County United Way

In April, Steuben County United Way, engaged in 40 different service projects over a two-day period which included, local parks and waterways clean up, building wheelchair accessible ramps, small home repairs for under-resources and low-income families and provided service hours  at local food banks.  

World Refugee Day 2017- Celebrate and Serve

 Serve Indiana has awarded the Center for Interfaith Cooperation to create a Day of Service project for the community in collaboration with the Burmese American Community Institute, Inc., Indy Urban Acres, and the Immigrant and Refugee Service Corps this summer.

The goal of the day is to help fulfill the mission of Indy Urban Acres of ending hunger in Indianapolis through outdoor gardening.  The day will also consist of facilitated activities, a poster contest on civic engagement and a presentations on healthy eating and nutrition education. Join them on June 20th from 10:00am-1:00pm at the Indy Urban Acres (7700 E. 21st Street, Indianapolis, IN 46219)

Corporation for National and Community Service News

Now Accepting Applications for AmeriCorps VISTA Programs

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) Indiana State Office welcomes applications from high performing Indiana nonprofits, agencies, organizations and institutions who share the VISTA mission of alleviating poverty at the community level.  

Each year VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) deploys over 7,000 high quality, full-time volunteers nationwide to help develop solutions to local community needs.  VISTA members serve in the community for a year to achieve sustainable results by helping organizations expand their reach, develop new programs, secure grants, develop evaluation systems, increase capacity, etc., all which directly benefit the local poverty community.

CNCS invites interested organizations to apply to sponsor a VISTA program of 3 or more members. To acquaint yourself with the VISTA Program and determine if VISTA is right for your organization, please go to Understanding VISTA .  Please submit a notice of intent to apply by June 30, 2017 to llopez@cns.gov .
