8 Tips for a Successful Internship

by Michelle Glazer & Tyler Glander

1.       Find a mentor – Find someone who will support you, show you the ropes, and give valuable advice as you start your career.

2.       Be proactive & set goals – Don’t wait, find things that need to be done, ask questions, and get to work. Work with your supervisor to set meaningful goals and checkpoints to keep yourself on target.

3.       Have a positive attitude & be confident  –  Even if you are feeling insecure or unhappy with a component of the internship, don’t dwell on negatives. Have confidence and take initiative rather than dwelling, second guessing, and doubting decisions. People remember you by your actions and attitude; no one wants to work with a grump.

4.       Avoid office politics/gossip – Don’t take sides, spread gossip, or be the source of drama. If you are being sucked in, consult your mentor about respectfully disengaging from these conversations.

5.       Stay off your phone! – Even if coworkers are on their phones, avoid texting, playing games, and getting on social media. People notice your work habits and assess what kind of intern you are so stay busy doing work at work.

6.        Don’t fix things before you know why they are done that way – Companies want interns to bring fresh ideas and perspectives; however, if you start rocking the boat too early, those ideas and opinions may not be welcome.

7.       Ask questions & for feedback – Don’t be afraid to ask questions, for feedback, and for constructive criticism; they show motivation and a willingness to learn. Supervisors don’t expect perfection, but they expect you to grow and learn from your mistakes.

8.       Network & stay in touch – Build quality relationships and make connections with people throughout the company. You never know who you may meet that could support you in your future career so make sure to stay in touch periodically.

Join us for the last hike of the 2019 series!

State employees, including interns, and their families are invited to participate in a hike on July 20, at Turkey Run State Park

This year, we're offering two hike options. OPTION ONE includes a guided hike that lasts about an hour. The trail is very rugged; absolutely no strollers are permitted. OPTION TWO is the five-mile challenge. Participants will receive a map and guide themselves. Explore the perimeter hiking trails in the Falls Canyon-Rocky Hollow Nature Preserve. You’ll traverse 3 canyons, climb a ladder, cross a suspension bridge, and see the park’s first steward’s home. Plan on 2-3 hours. Portions of the hiking challenge may be impassable after large rainfalls. No water or bathrooms are available along the route, which starts at the nature center.
