Perry County inspires students through ASPIRE

PC ASPIRE

On March 13, the Perry County College Success Coalition hosted its 5th Annual ASPIRE event, a day-long opportunity for Perry County sophomores to explore the wide array of careers available in the area.

Students met with nearly 80 local professionals spanning a variety of fields, including engineering, manufacturing, healthcare, entrepreneurship, and others, to learn more about prospective career opportunities, ask questions about different job positions and practice interviewing skills.

Read more about ASPIRE and how Perry County is addressing local workforce demands in our guest blog post from Erin Emerson, Perry County Development Corporation Vice President.

In 2018, women held only 24.6 percent of Hoosier cybersecurity positions.

Since 2010, cyber jobs have increased by more than 75 percent, resulting in more than one million unfilled cyber positions nationwide. Currently, an estimated 2,300 of these positions are housed in the Hoosier state.

“We should encourage our young people to know and pursue tech-based skills to help develop critical thinking skills and find fulfilling careers in a high-wage, high-demand field.” – Governor Holcomb

With this in mind, Governor Holcomb announced the 2019 Girls Go CyberStart challenge, a skills-based competition designed to inspire and encourage young women to pursue cyber-based learning and career opportunities.

Female high school students take on the roles of agents in the Cyber Protection Agency, sleuthing through challenges and tackling online cybercriminals while also developing forensic and analytical skills.

Connecting Indiana Communities

Next Level Connections

Connecting Hoosiers to fitness, fiber and flights is Governor Holcomb’s Next Level Connections infrastructure program, including Next Level Trails and Next Level Broadband.

Next Level Connections aims to link Hoosiers to each other and the world through the expansion of broadband services in rural Indiana, the development of Indiana’s systems of trails, and the creation of nonstop international flights.

Next Level Trails kicked off its first round of funding with 82 applications from 42 counties around the state requesting nearly $144 million to develop hiking, biking and riding trails throughout the state.

Next Level Broadband is bridging the digital divide by bringing high-speed, affordable broadband, essential for a highly functioning 21st Century economy, to rural Indiana.

The governor is also working toward bringing more nonstop international flights to Indiana, encouraging additional economic investment and direct connections with more markets throughout the world.

Over 2 million Hoosiers eligible for INfreefile

IN FreeFile 2019

It’s often said the best things in life are FREE, and that includes free tax filing with Indiana free file (INfreefile).

INfreefile enables Hoosiers with lower adjusted gross incomes (AGI) to file state and federal taxes for free using simple question-and-answer software through TurboTax, H&R Block, TaxAct, FreeTaxUSA or OnLine Taxes.

If your AGI was less than $66,000 in 2018, you may be one of more than 2 million eligible Hoosiers. Find out if you qualify.
