Tuesday, May 9:

Fitness: Tabata classes on Statehouse's South Lawn

Join the National Institute for Fitness and Sport (NIFS) for Tabata classes on the South Lawn of the Statehouse Tuesday, May 9. Class is noon to 12:50 p.m. There is no cost to participate and the class is open to anyone, regardless of fitness level or Tabata experience. Please RSVP here.

In case of inclement weather, the class will be in the South Atrium of the Statehouse. Please wear proper footwear for hard surfaces if this is the case. Be sure to bring your state ID badge as you will need it to enter the Statehouse.

INPRS Money Moves Lunch & Learn

Join INPRS for either of their Lunch and Learns offered on early planning for retirement. There’s no better time than now to begin preparing for your retirement. Early planning can impact the amount of money you will have at retirement. Let their expert help you prepare to retire well while enjoying the now. Both lunch and learn sessions are in IGC-S, Room 16 and start at 11:15 a.m. & 12:15 p.m. Both classes last a half hour.

Wednesday, May 10:

Elements Financial Fraud Lunch and Learn

As a preview to the Statehouse Market returning in 2017, head out to Robert Orr Plaza on Thursday to grab lunch from your favorite food truck. Invest In Your Health, Go365 and a few others will also be there to answer questions you may have.

Food trucks include: Wild Boar BBQ, Nacho Mama's, El Venezolano, Brozinni's Pizzeria, Serendipity, Pierogi Love Indy, Soul Sista On The Move, Greiner's Sub Shop, Groovy Guys Fries, The Flying Cupcake and Nicey Treat. 

Fun: De-stress with ICAN pups

Be sure to stop by the ICAN booth on the plaza when grabbing lunch to play with and pet some of the newest ICAN recruits. The program works to train dogs for service, but first they are bringing them to our event so that you can pet and play with them. The dogs are here from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Friday, May 12:

Fitness 3.0: Pilates in IGC-S on Friday

It is true that there are three fitness classes scheduled during Public Service Recognition Week. After Thursday's lunch out on the plaza, join us for a Pilates class on Friday from noon to 1 p.m. in the IGC-S Conference Room B. This class is open to anyone, regardless of fitness level or Pilates experience. This class has limited space RSVP here to save your spot.

Based on the traditional teachings of Joseph Pilates, this class builds long, lean muscles; strengthens the core; improves muscle balance and posture, while increasing coordination. It is recommended that you dress comfortably for activity and bring some water to stay hydrated. Please bring a yoga mat or beach towel if you have one. Don’t forget to sign in before the class begins!

The Statehouse Market returns to its roots for its sixth season on the redesigned Robert D. Orr Plaza. As in year's past, the farmers' market (with food trucks) occurs Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. starting May 25.

Statehouse Market is Back

Visit Indiana Week begins with free entry to state parks May 7

Hop in your car and discover something new in the Hoosier State. Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch and the Indiana Office of Tourism Development (IOTD) are kicking off the summer travel season with Visit Indiana Week May 7-13, part of National Travel and Tourism Week. 

To start the week, May 7, you can take advantage of FREE admission at all Indiana State Parks, thanks to a partnership with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

“Visit Indiana Week is the perfect time to explore what our great state has to offer,” said Lt. Governor Crouch. “Indiana State Parks offer a combined 7,700 campsites and more than 150 cabins, and nearly 700 miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails.” 

Visit Indiana is celebrating Visit Indiana Week by going on a road trip throughout the state with Midwest Living magazine.  Dubbed the Indiana Road Rally Presented by Midwest Living magazine, Hoosiers can join the trip on May 8, 2017 at the Big Four Bridge in Jeffersonville for a night walk set to lights and music.

Toastmasters Open House

Many employers today are looking for people with proven leadership skills. If you need to develop these skills, the Golden Gavel Toastmasters are hosting an open House on Tuesday, May 2, in IGC-S Conference Room 17. The open house is a special event to demonstrate how you can build your leadership and communication skills through Toastmasters. To reserve your space at this free event now, contact JGannon@dwd.IN.gov.

Golden Gavel meets every other Tuesday from noon to 1 p.m. Members learn and practice their skills using a proven system to reach their personal goals, and to earn internationally-recognized certification to show potential employers. See an actual meeting, tailored for guests, at the Open House in IGCS Conference Room 17 on Tuesday, May 2 at noon until 1 p.m.

Mini Marathon Shirt Pickup

If you’re registered for the State of Indiana team for the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini Marathon or Finish Line 500 Festival 5K, be sure to pick up your t-shirt next week! Stop by from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday before the race (May 3rd, 4th, and 5th) at the Indiana State Personnel Department main office, located in Indiana Government Center South, Room W161, 402 W. Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204. The deadline to sign up for a shirt was April 16. Size selection is not guaranteed.

It may be too late to get a t-shirt, but it’s not too late to join the State of Indiana Team! The team consists of both runners and walkers, and we’d love for you to join! Register for either one of the runs/walks here, and more information about the race can be found here. Be sure to log in with your state email to receive a discounted Mini Marathon entry for $65, or a Finish Line 500 5K entry for $30 from now until May 1.

NOTE: If you’ve already registered for either the Mini Marathon or 5K, but did not join the State of Indiana team, email bpawelak@500festival.com to be added to the team and refunded the difference in price.

Remaining Workforce Week Activities

Today: Downtown Indy State of Downtown at Union Station. 

Friday: HandleBar Hot Lap on Monument Circle, first round starting at 11 a.m. and lasting until 1 p.m. With the finals starting at 4 p.m. There will also be Food trucks on the circle along with IPL's Free Tree Day and Lemonade Day during lunch.

5K and Hike Logo

Going, Going, Almost Gone

There is still room at three 5Ks and one of the Hikes in the 2017 Run The State 5K and Hike Series. Visit www.investinyourhealthindiana.com/5k to grab a spot before they are all gone.

Traffic Congestion Alert

Runners participating in this year’s Mini Marathon (Saturday, May 6) are picking up their race packets at the convention center Thursday, May 4, between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Friday, May 5, between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. 

This typically creates quite a bit of congestion around the Washington Street Garage, especially in the evening. Please plan accordingly and drive safely.
