Here are your weekly opioid epidemic updates from the Indiana State Department of Health:

Opioid-Involved Overdose Deaths with Fentanyl or Fentanyl Analogs Detected – 28 States and the District of Columbia, July 2016 - December 2018

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded 32 states and the District of Columbia (DC) to enhance postmortem toxicology testing and abstract data on opioid-involved overdose deaths through the State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS). This analysis reports rapid changes in opioid-involved overdose deaths with fentanyl and fentanyl analogs in 10 states with available SUDORS data and provides a description of the most recent data on deaths with fentanyl and fentanyl analogs detected among 28 states and the DC. Indiana is included as one of the 28 states that there is recent data for from July-December 2018. During this time period in 28 states and DC one or more fentanyl analogs were detected in 2,824 (19.4%) of opioid-involved overdose deaths. Fentanyl was detected in 73.9% of opioid-involved overdose deaths. Timely toxicological surveillance is critical for accurate detection of opioid-involved overdose deaths and, in turn, to inform interventions that could mitigate health consequences of rapid illicit drug market changes.

Indiana to allow opioid treatment programs the use of lockboxes; provide naloxone to help reduce spread of COVID-19

In an effort to reduce the potential to acquire and/or spread COVID-19, the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction, with support from Overdose Lifeline, will supply opioid treatment programs with lockboxes and naloxone kits. The lockboxes will enable Hoosiers, who are stable in their treatment of opioid use disorder, the ability to reduce their number of trips and time spent at an opioid treatment program (OTP) to receive a daily dose of methadone. The lockboxes will secure take-home doses of methadone for people in treatment and help reduce their exposure to COVID-19. There will be naloxone issued with the lockboxes as a precautionary method.

National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week (NDAFW): March 30 – April 5

is a national health observance and events are hosted by schools; local nonprofits and other community-based organizations; state and local health departments; PTSAs; faith-based organizations; afterschool clubs; and more to equip and educate young people about the effects of drugs and alcohol on the developing teen brain and body. Registered events and activities appear on an interactive map and are highlighted on the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) website. They can include anything from a lunchroom informational table to a social media campaign. Additionally to the events, there are opportunities to receive free materials and resources for teens. Also, a new event taking place in 2020 is the National Drug & Alcohol IQ Challenge.
