The Indiana Perinatal Quality Improvement Collaborative has released “Breastfeeding and Substance Use: Evidence-based Practices Guidance Document.” This comprehensive guide is intended for physicians, nurses, breastfeeding consultants, home visitors and others who support a woman to successfully breastfeed her infant. The report recommends the establishment of guidelines for providers and policies for hospitals related to breastfeeding mothers who are using prescribed and/or illicit substances.
The Peer Recovery Network hosts an annual conference for Certified Recovery Specialists (CRS), Community Health Workers (CHW) and those who support them. The next CRS/CHW Spring Conference and Pre-Conference will be April 21, 2020, at the Embassy Suites, Plainfield. The conference organizers are beginning to collect presenter proposals and award nominations. The Call for Presenters form is attached. The deadline for submissions to present is Dec. 20, 2019 .

To support children and families impacted by substance abuse, Sesame Workshop, the not-for-profit education organization behind “Sesame Street,” is releasing content centered on a new Muppet whose mom is struggling with substance abuse. The resources, which are part of the Sesame Street in Communities program and are available at no charge, deliver these helpful words for children: You are not alone. You will be taken care of. Addiction is a sickness and, as with any sickness, people need help to get better. And most importantly: It’s not your fault.
A panel of 15 subject-matter experts convened by the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) released a thorough report of recommendations for addressing the opioid crisis in the United States, focused on the potential for a master settlement agreement. If a multi-district litigation settlement is reached, the panel recommends using the settlement funds to improve data collection and dissemination, combat stigma, ensure access to medication for opioid use disorder, reduce associated harms, support primary prevention, fund research and advance program evaluation and implementation.
