Explore TED Talks focused on opioids

TED talk

TED, the not-for-profit that posts short, powerful talks online for free distribution, has several opioid-related talks worth exploring. For example, fire chief and first responder Jan Radar discusses her work in Huntington, Virginia, that has helped highlight stigma around substance use disorder, established Quick Response Teams, and launched other efforts to reduce overdose deaths by about 50 percent. Another talk delivered by Chera Kowalski focuses on the role of librarians in the opioid epidemic.

Resilient Youth Initiative Grants available in some counties

North Central Health Services (NCHS) has announced a new grant opportunity for K-12 school corporations serving Benton, Carroll, Clinton, Fountain, Montgomery, Tippecanoe, Warren and White counties in Indiana. NCHS has allocated $2 million to the Resilient Youth Initiative to fund planning and implementation grants for proven programs that support social and emotional learning and substance use prevention for youth. Applications are due May 31, 2019.

Trump’s administration supports syringe exchange program

Syringe exchange

In a recent talk delivered at the National HIV Prevention Conference in Atlanta, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said the Trump administration supports syringe service programs to end the transmission of HIV within 10 years. Studies have consistently shown that such programs work to stop the spread of infectious diseases. They help to connect people to treatment and provide users with the opioid-overdose drug naloxone.
