Indianapolis, IN - This morning just after 2:30 Indiana State Police Sergeant Jon Caddell found himself in the right place at the right time to intervene when two reckless drivers allegedly raced one another on I-70 eastbound in the north split. Sgt. Caddell said "I noticed a Corvette and a Mustang recklessly weaving in and out of traffic at an incredibly high rate of speed." "As I was catching up to the vehicles I found they were in excess of 130 mile per hour."
Caddell was able to get both vehicles pulled over onto the shoulder where his investigation led him to find 20 year old Donavan Wilson, the driver of the Corvette, was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. A search of his vehicle led to the discovery of a bag of synthetic urine. Wilson was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated, Operating While Intoxicated on a Controlled Substance, Underage Consumption of Alcohol, Speed Contest, Reckless Driving and Possession of a Device to Interfere with a Drug Test.
The driver of the Mustang, 43 year old Bradley Roberts of Greenfield, was also arrested on the preliminary charges of Speed Contest and Reckless Driving. Both men were booked into the Marion County Jail.
Lt. Jeff Payne, commander of the Indiana State Police Indianapolis District, said. "Safety of our community and the drivers along our roadways is our highest priority." He went on to say, "drag racing is something that will not be tolerated, we will continue to utilize special patrols and unmarked vehicles to monitor and stop these illegal and reckless drivers."
People can report reckless drivers by calling police. Please be prepared to give location, direction of travel as well as a detailed description of the vehicle(s) involved.
The investigation has been turned over to the Marion County Prosecutor's Office, the charges listed in this release are merely preliminary, actual charges will be determined by the prosecutor's office.
All suspects are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
