People Working From Home Tripled Between 2019 and 2021
The U.S. Census Bureau collected information about remote work while we were all encountering pandemic precautions these past few years. This month, American Community Survey estimates showed the number of people in the U.S. working from home tripled between 2019 and 2021. In Indiana, there was also an increase, with 170% more people working from home between 2019 and 2021. In Indianapolis, the increase in 2 years was 315%.

Where do you find workforce, unemployment, and labor data for Indiana?
Many of the requests we get at the Indiana State Data Center are for population data, such as “How many people lived in Vanderburgh County between 1950 and 2020?” or “What was the racial/ethnic background of the residents of this part of Indianapolis at the turn of the century?”
Every so often, though, we get a request for occupation information or employment rates. In times of economic transition, like now, it’s important to watch for this kind of data as it applies to the areas where you live.
If you are looking for workforce data, Indiana has a terrific resource called Hoosiers by the Numbers, which you can find at https://www.hoosierdata.in.gov. Search for definitions of terms that may be new to you, like Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) and Percentile wage estimate, in the Glossary here.
Check the StatsIndiana Labor Force Estimates and Unemployment Rates page for more.
