Video game collections in your library

Alexandria-Monroe Public Library Assistant Director Eric Fisher recently wrote a guest blog for the Indiana State Library in which he details many aspects of curating a video game collection for your library.

"After doing a presentation at the Indiana Library Federation (ILF) conference this this year, I thought I’d try to answer many common questions and considerations that a collection developer might face when considering circulating video games."

Indianapolis Public Library names head of Center for African-American Literature and Culture

nichelle

The Indianapolis Public Library (IndyPL) has announced the appointment of Nichelle M. Hayes as specialist to develop and lead the new Center for African-American Literature and Culture at Central Library.

Hayes began her IndyPL tenure in March of 2015 as a system-wide training librarian and for the past year has acted as a business librarian at Central Library. She also has served as a member of the library’s African-American History Committee.

Funded as part of a $3.1 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., the Center for African-American Literature and Culture at Central Library will open in October of 2017 as a place to study the works of local African-American writers and discover the rich heritage of black authors from Indiana and beyond. It will feature an initial collection of 10,000 volumes as well as special programming, such as author visits, forums and exhibits to showcase the African-American experience. The center also will promote the activities of the African-American History Committee.

“My goal is to combine a robust collection with interactive programming that can be a beacon to people in the community and bring them together,” Hayes stated. “I’m very excited to have the opportunity to add to the library’s existing offerings and to make this center the best of its kind in the nation.”

The Center for African-American Literature and Culture will be located in the 3,990-square-foot Robert B. Annis West Reading Room at Central Library. Its targeted opening will correspond with the 100th anniversary celebration of Central Library.

State park passes to be sent to public libraries in early January

parks

The Indiana State Library (ISL) and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) have agreed to extend the Annual Parks Pass Program for one more year. The passes will be sent to libraries through InfoExpress as soon as they arrive in early January.

ISL is again thrilled to partner with DNR to offer this program. ISL is purchasing one pass for each public library in every library district. Passes are limited to one pass per building and libraries may purchase additional passes through the DNR site for individual branches. The passes are non-transferable and DNR is again allowing libraries exceptions for these passes.

This year, DNR would like libraries help to get direct feedback from the users of the passes. A user survey will be posted on ISL’s site so that libraries may print as needed. Please send completed surveys to Wendy Knapp through InfoExpress throughout the year.

STEAM survey

ISLLogo

Please take a moment to complete this short survey from the Indiana State Library (ISL) on behalf of your library. The survey focuses on what libraries in the state are currently doing to promote or facilitate science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM). The survey is open to any library in the state of Indiana. Responses will be used to create a resource list to facilitate information sharing and to gain feedback on current ISL professional development resources for STEAM services.
