State Librarian Jacob Speer, Indiana Superintendent of Schools Glenda Ritz and Justice Mark S. Massa
On Friday, Dec. 9, 2016, the Indiana State Library (ISL) hosted Statehood Day, an event celebrating Indiana's bicentennial.
Fourth-grade and sixth-grade students from Fishback Creek Public Academy, Sidener Academy and Traders Point Christian Academy attended the celebration. Speakers included State Librarian Jacob Speer, Justice Mark S. Massa and Indiana Superintendent of Schools Glenda Ritz, who delivered the keynote address.
ISL's Indiana Young Readers Center Librarian Christy Franzman hosted the event, which also included actors appearing as Abraham Lincoln and James Whitcomb Riley. Students were given souvenir buttons and wooden nickels as they moved from activity to activity throughout the day.
Indiana celebrates Statehood Day on the 11th of December each year.
The Indiana State Library (ISL) is happy to announce Courtney Allison as the new
Southeast regional coordinator. Courtney began her career at the Indianapolis Public
Library in the Central Library’s Learning Curve, a digital learning environment
for children and teens.
In 2010, after being hired as Plainfield-Guilford
Township Public Library’s (PGTPL) first teen coordinator, she transformed teen services
and created a welcoming and vibrant teen space.
In 2013, she oversaw the
integration of children’s services and teen services into youth services in
order to improve and streamline operations. As the youth services manager at
PGTPL, Courtney oversaw a renovation, participated in the library’s technology team and presented training with all library staff.
She’s excited to be a part
of ISL's Professional Development Office's (PDO) staff.
The Indiana State Library (ISL) is excited to announce Katie
Turner as the new program director 5 for the library’s Genealogy Division. Katie
was born and raised in Berlin and lived there until her family came to the
United States when she was nine. She’s been in central Indiana ever since.
Katie started her library career paging at the Greenwood
Public Library at fifteen and has a background in graphic design.
Additionally, Katie loves Bret Easton Ellis’ “Less than
Zero,” Bob Dylan, Hillary Clinton and Jon Hamm, citing “Mad Men” as her
favorite show of all-time. Also an artist, she enjoys drawing, painting,
designing, scrapbooking and making mixed media work.
Katie is looking forward to working with ISL’s collaborative
and team-based staff. Welcome.
On Monday, Dec. 12, 2016, the State Data Center (SDC) held
a celebration at the Indiana State Library (ISL) to commemorate the beginning
of a longstanding federal-state partnership between the state of Indiana and
the Census Bureau. SDC also took the opportunity to celebrate Indiana’s
Bicentennial.
Following a local level census project that began in 1972
in Indianapolis under Indiana Senator Richard Lugar, the U.S. Census Bureau
began plans for a statewide project for census data users in Indiana and in
April of 1976, the Indiana Census User Services Project (ICUSP) was established
as the first pilot project of its kind in the nation. Its purpose was to create
a model for data user education and data dissemination inside a state agency –
and that state agency was ISL. ICUSP provided the model for the development of
a national state data center network. The network in Indiana was already going
strong when it was officially adopted into the national network in 1980.
This week’s celebration included several speakers from
the Census Bureau: David Pemberton, historian; Michael Ratcliffe, geography
division; James Whitehorne, redistricting and voting rights and Sarah Konya,
mathematical statistician with the decennial census. Matthew Kinghorne, state demographer,
spoke about 200 Years of Indiana demographics. Phil Worrall, of the Indiana
Geographic Information Council, talked about statewide GIS partnerships. Marilyn
Sanders, from the Chicago regional office, also spoke about Indiana and the
upcoming 2020 census.
Perry Hammock, the executive director of the Bicentennial
Commission, ended the day with a vibrant speech on Indiana’s 200th
birthday celebrations across the state in 2016.
SDC is grateful for those who were able to attend the
celebration. Be on the lookout for future events and training through the Indiana State Data Center Program,
your safety net for stats.

The Indiana State Library (ISL) and the Indiana Department
of Natural Resources (DNR) have agreed to extend the Annual Parks Pass Program
for one more year. The passes will be sent to libraries through InfoExpress as
soon as possible and they will arrive in January.
ISL is thrilled to partner with DNR to offer this program. ISL
is purchasing one pass for each public library in every library district. Passes are limited to one pass per building and libraries
may purchase additional passes through the DNR site for individual branches. The
passes are non-transferable and DNR is again allowing libraries exceptions for
these passes.
This year, DNR would like libraries help to get direct feedback
from the users of the passes. A user survey will be posted on ISL’s site so
that libraries may print as needed. Please send completed surveys to Wendy
Knapp through InfoExpress throughout the year.
