The Indiana Library & Historical
Board (ILHB) voted unanimously on Dec. 2, 2016 to keep the cost of
the Public Library Access Card (PLAC) at $65 effective Jan. 1,
2017.
The PLAC program allows library patrons
to purchase a card which permits them to borrow materials directly from
any public library in Indiana.
Any individual who holds a valid
Indiana public library card may obtain a PLAC card. The cost of the card
is $65 and each card is valid for 12 months after being issued.
The
Indiana State Library collects the revenue from the sale of these cards
and places it in a designated fund account for the PLAC program. After
the end of the calendar year, the money is distributed back to
libraries on the basis of net loans.
Dec. 7, 2016 marks the 82nd anniversary of the dedication of the Indiana State Library (ISL) building.
According to a Nov. 1, 1934 article in Greencastle's The Daily Banner, the dedication of the "new million dollar State library and historical building" was scheduled to take place on Dec.7, 1934. The building was presented to the state by Herbert Kenney, building commission chairman. Gov. Paul V. McNutt was also in attendance.
The ISL website states, "The plan and design for the Indiana State Library and Historical
Building, guided by a fine imagination and drawn with a firm hand,
avoids completely the confused expression so common to many similar
buildings."
The website also expresses that the building's "beauty is a matter of proportion rather than of applied ornament."

The Indiana Historical Bureau (IHB) recently launched its
brand new online shop. Previously, all orders were made by phone, so here
is your chance to purchase your favorite Indiana-related items online. In the online
shop you will find souvenirs such as Indy 500 stickers, Indiana coasters,
state flags and historic Indiana postcards, in addition to some of the more
popular book titles. You can even find items made by Indiana artists online. Due
to the amount of titles found in the IHB’s gift shop, not all are available
online.
Over the last year, IHB’s staff has been working to
curate a collection of Indiana and Indianapolis-themed souvenirs, artisan
crafts and gifts to go along with their existing collection of Indiana-related
titles. If there is something you’d like to see in the shop, please don’t
hesitate to make a suggestion.
The IHB’s physical storefront is located inside the
Indiana State Library on the first floor, just west of the Ohio St. entrance,
and is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every weekday.
You can visit the online storefront here.

Paula Newcom, Indiana
State Library’s Northeast regional coordinator, recently spoke with new Syracuse
Public Library director, Kim Blaha. Blaha has previously worked at several
libraries in northern Indiana. “It was really cool to learn that she was a
music major in college and plays the French horn, one of my favorite
instruments,” Newcom said.
Paula Newcom:
Are you from the area? If not, where are you from originally? Kim Blaha: I was born in Indiana,
but grew up in the Southeast suburbs of Chicago. I have lived in Ohio, Oregon,
Wisconsin and now Indiana.
PN: What inspired you to work in
libraries? KB: I have always loved the
library and believe it is a calling for me.
PN: What is your favorite thing about working for
your library? KB: My favorite thing about
working for my library is the opportunity to be constantly creative. I love
solving problems and learning new things. I also enjoy sharing my discoveries
with others, whether it is a great book, a cool app or a form I developed to
make record-keeping more streamlined.
PN: What is your favorite book? KB: Currently, my favorite book
is "All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr. That will probably
change next month. The book I’ve read the most times is "The Hobbit."
I usually read that once a year.
PN: If you could have dinner with
any three famous people in recorded history, who would they be and why? KB: I would like to have dinner
with Ralph Vaughn Williams, because I love his music; President Obama, because
I would love to know what it is like to be the head of a country and keep your
sense of humor; and Elizabeth Cady Stanton to find out how she managed as a
woman and a crusader.
PN: What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at
work? KB: I love the outdoors: reading
outside in my hammock, gardening and playing ball with my dog. I play French
horn professionally and for relaxation I color or do other creative projects.

On this Sunday, Dec. 11, 2016, Indiana turns 200 years old. Throughout
this year, the Indiana Division of the Indiana State Library has been
highlighting historical events with the project “This Week in Indiana History.” Created
to promote resources found within the Indiana Collection, the project was
officially endorsed as a Bicentennial
Legacy Project by the Indiana Bicentennial Commission. For the week of December
11 through 17, Indiana Statehood was the obvious choice for the week’s
historical event. You can view the event here. The
process that Indiana Territory followed to become a state can be traced with
several historical government documents, including the Memorial to Congress
from Dec. 11, 1815, the Enabling Act of April 19, 1816, Indiana’s Constitution
and the Congressional Resolution granting statehood on Dec. 11, 1816.
Still can’t get enough Indiana history? Be sure to check out
“Hoosier History Highlights,” a
source for day-by-day historical events, compiled by the Statehouse Tour
Office. Maybe you’re looking for a chance to take part in a Hoosier history event
this weekend. You are invited to the grand finale of Indiana’s year-long bicentennial
celebrations with the event, “Celebrate
Indiana: Ignite the Future.” This free, family event will take place on
Statehood Day, Dec. 11, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Indiana State Fairgrounds’ Indiana Farmers Coliseum. Admission
and parking for the event are free. Make sure to tell parking staff that you
are attending "Celebrate Indiana: Ignite the Future." For more
information about the event visit www.indiana2016.org
or click the event link, “Celebrate
Indiana: Ignite the Future.” Check out the list of Bicentennial events still
happening around the state here.
