Professional development survey

StateLib

The Indiana State Library is conducting a survey about professional development in Indiana libraries and what we can do to serve you better. This survey is intended to be taken by all library staff members. Please share widely with others in your library and encourage them to fill out the survey. We anticipate it taking anywhere from 5-15 minutes to complete. To reiterate, if you work in a library in Indiana, we’d like you to take this survey.

Take the survey here

The survey will close at 8:00 AM Eastern time on November 28, 2016.

Collaborative Summer Library Program in-person training

collab

Join the Indiana State Library for in-person Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) training where you will be introduced to the theme, the artwork and the manual (now available online) for the 2017 CSLP Summer Reading Program. Each training will last 1.5 hours, with a portion of that time reserved for roundtable-style discussion. What does this mean? Bring your program ideas. Each participant should bring at least one program idea to share with the group. Program ideas may or may not be related to the CSLP theme Build a Better World. We want to hear what you’re excited about! These training sessions will each be worth 2 LEUs. Please see Upcoming Workshops & Important Dates for a complete list of sessions.

New state library children's consultant

beth

The Indiana State Library is excited to announce that effective Monday, Nov. 14, 2016 Beth Yates, who has been serving as the library's regional coordinator for the southeast, will be moving over to the position of children’s consultant.

Prior to her work at the Indiana State Library, Beth was a children’s librarian for 12 years at the Johnson County Public Library. She spent eight of those years as children's services manager. She looks forward to utilizing her background in youth services to offer training and support to children’s librarians throughout Indiana.

The state library is also very excited to welcome Courtney Allison. She will take over the southeast region. Courtney’s first day as southeast regional consultant is Dec. 5, 2017. Beth will continue to monitor the southeast region until Courtney starts.

Celebrate Indiana: Ignite the Future

Ignite

Celebrate the finale of Indiana's Bicentennial year at Ignite the Future. This free, family event will take place on Statehood Day, Dec. 11, 2017 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Indiana Farmers Coliseum from 10 a.m. to noon. The two-hour program will include a variety of speakers from diverse faith backgrounds as well as music, dance and more.

Hoosiers of all ages are invited to celebrate this once in a lifetime event. It is our hope that the event will inspire Hoosiers to Ignite the Future and make the next 100 years of Indiana history even better than the last 200. So, the only question now is how will you Ignite the Future?

For more information about the event visit www.indiana2016.org and click the tab Celebrate Indiana: Ignite the Future.

Library Development Office and Indianapolis Public Library team up for booksale and workshops

Several times throughout the year, the Indianapolis Public Library (IPL) holds a public book sale to dispose of duplicate, discarded or unneeded materials from their collection. On the Monday following the public sale the library offers the remainder of the collection to nonprofit organizations, including libraries and correctional facilities.

Twice each year, in April and November, on the nonprofit day, the Indiana State Library’s (ISL) Library Development Office (LDO) offers interlibrary loan workshops for the public, private school and institutional libraries it supports with its outreach services, such as IN-SHARE and InfoExpress. Topics covered during these sessions include IN-SHARE, InfoExpress, effective use of Book Club requests and SRCS, Indiana's new Statewide Remote Circulation Service, which allows users to search a statewide catalog of over 30 million items and request to have them delivered to their home library. Additionally, ISL staff are on hand to bag up and prep the materials for shipping.

This year, on Nov. 21, 2016, ISL staff bagged and labeled 487 parcels, over-filling three 4’ by 4’ by 4’ pallets. That equals roughly 10,000 free books that were made available to underfunded libraries around the state and to institutional libraries. Look for the next workshop in April of 2017.
