The Library Development Office is pleased to announce that we still have some refurbished desktop computers available for interested libraries.
These computers are all Dell Optiplex 780s, running Windows 7 Professional and have a minimum of 2GB ram, 40GB or larger hard drives, a DVD Drive, antivirus software, an Ethernet card, and are internet ready. These computers come with all of the required cables and mice. Flat screen monitors are also available.
These computers are provided at no cost to interested libraries through a partnership between Net Literacy, a central Indiana based volunteer organization and the Indiana State Library. Since 2011, this partnership has made over 1,200 free, rebuilt computers and monitors available to public and institutional libraries in Indiana.
Quantities are limited and priority will be given to recipients that can arrange to pick up the computers at the Indiana State Library. Electronics cannot be shipped via InfoExpress.
Please visit Net Literacy’s website http://www.netliteracy.org to learn more about the organization and their efforts to improve Digital Literacy nationwide. The Indiana State Library, in partnership with Net Literacy, is once again making free, rebuilt public access computers available to libraries. These computers are available to any public or institutional library in Indiana (sorry, but schools are not eligible for this service).
If you would like to request computer(s) for your library, please complete this short online questionnaire by clicking here. Requests will be accepted until November 30, 2016.
Contact Steven Schmidt from the Library Development Office at steschmidt@library.in.gov if you have any questions.
The Children of Indiana Nature Park has teamed
up with Indiana Poet Laureate
Shari Wagner for a nature-inspired poetry contest for kids. Shari’s
poetry prompt invites children to write a poem about their favorite wild animal
(with preference to animals native to Indiana). Teachers, librarians and youth
leaders are encouraged to have their students participate in this contest.
Selected young poets may win a visit from the Indiana Poet Laureate Shari
Wagner to their school or group!
The poetry prompt, models, and rules about how
to submit at The Children of Indiana Nature Park website can all be found by clicking here.

For over two decades, National Adoption Month has been
celebrated across the United States, with its origins presented in this timeline. Historically, American
adoption procedures have varied by location and according to laws in place
during a particular time period. Children’s aid societies and orphan trains
predated many modern state adoption laws. Access to adoption records continues
to differ from state to state. The Adoption History Project from the University of Oregon,
takes a historical view of adoption with a detailed timeline, information about
people and organizations, adoption studies/adoption science, topics in adoption
history, resources for further reading, and document archives. Document
excerpts and images have been drawn from a wide range of published and archival sources.
The 2016 National Adoption Month theme, “We Never Outgrow the Need for
Family," will focus on the adoption of older youth currently in foster
care. The Indiana Department of Child
Services (DCS) announced in a
press release that National Adoption
Month will kick-off on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at The Children’s Museum of
Indianapolis. Throughout November, DCS Indiana Adoption Program in partnership
with the Children’s Bureau, county courts, and other community organizations,
will host more than 25 Adoption Awareness Events throughout
the state. Both Indiana Adoption Program’s Picture Book and the Indiana Heart
Gallery profile and share stories of older youth currently in foster care and
available for adoption. These stories and additional information about the
Indiana Adoption Program are on the DCS adoption web page at www.adoptachild.in.gov or by
calling 1-888-25-ADOPT. There was an increase from State Fiscal Year 2014
which had 1,038 adoptions, to State Fiscal Year 2016 which had 1,509 finalized
adoptions. A report on DCS Adoption Statistics can be found at http://in.gov/dcs/3139.htm.
On the Federal government
level, the Children's
Bureau, within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, funds the National Adoption Month initiative each
November through a partnership with AdoptUSKids and Child Welfare Information Gateway. Additional Resources to promote the initiative include
a Tip Sheet: Talking With Older Youth About Adoption and Foster Care Ad Campaign Public Service Announcements.
