NEA Big Read 2017 is now accepting applications

NEA

NEA Big Read is accepting applications from non-profit organizations to develop community-wide reading programs between September 2017 and June 2018. NEA Big Read is a national program that broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.

A Big Read is a month-long series of programs centered around one NEA Big Read book. Programs should include a kickoff, a keynote, book discussions, and other artistic events to foster engagement with the selected title and encourage reading.

Organizations selected to participate in the program receive a grant, educational and promotional materials, and access to online training resources and opportunities. Approximately 75 organizations from across the country will be selected.

Funding ranges from $5,000 to $20,000

We are proud to announce the addition of 13 new titles to the Big Read list this year!

The application deadline is January 26, 2017. To submit an application or to find out more about the application process please click here.

If you have any question call Arts Midwest at 612.238.8010 or email neabigread@artsmidwest.org.

Geek culture in libraries

Dice

Interested in hearing about the latest trends in geek culture and how they pertain to your library? If so, join Alex Sarkissian (Morrisson-Reeves Public Library) and Jocelyn Lewis (Indiana State Library) at the Indiana Library Federation’s annual conference.  They will be presenting “Geekspotting 1.0” on Wednesday, November 9 at 3pm.  Topics will include Pokemon Go, trends in tabletop gaming and a discussion of the new Star Wars canon.  They will also check-in on popular superhero film franchises and make graphic novel recommendations.

To register for ILF16 click here.

If you can’t make it to the conference but want to know more about how libraries can promote and nurture geek culture, visit Cosplay, Comics and Geek Culture in Libraries at ccgclibraries.com.

Refurbished desktop computers available!

desktop computer

The Library Development Office is pleased to announce that we still have some refurbished desktop computers available for interested libraries.

These computers are all Dell Optiplex 780s, running Windows 7 Professional and have a minimum of 2GB ram, 40GB or larger hard drives, a DVD Drive, antivirus software, an Ethernet card, and are internet ready. These computers come with all of the required cables and mice. Flat screen monitors are also available.

These computers are provided at no cost to interested libraries through a partnership between Net Literacy, a central Indiana based volunteer organization and the Indiana State Library.  Since 2011, this partnership has made over 1,200 free, rebuilt computers and monitors available to public and institutional libraries in Indiana.

Quantities are limited and priority will be given to recipients that can arrange to pick up the computers at the Indiana State Library. Electronics cannot be shipped via InfoExpress.

Please visit Net Literacy’s website http://www.netliteracy.org to learn more about the organization and their efforts to improve Digital Literacy nationwide. The Indiana State Library, in partnership with Net Literacy, is once again making free, rebuilt public access computers available to libraries. These computers are available to any public or institutional library in Indiana (sorry, but schools are not eligible for this service).

If you would like to request computer(s) for your library, please complete this short online questionnaire by clicking here.  Requests will be accepted until November 30, 2016.

Contact Steven Schmidt from the Library Development Office at steschmidt@library.in.gov if you have any questions.
