Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read

Banned Books

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community; librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types, in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. Check out the frequently challenged books section to explore the issues and controversies around book challenges and book banning. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted with removal or restrictions in libraries and schools. While books have been and continue to be banned, part of the Banned Books Week celebration is the fact that, in a majority of cases, the books have remained available. This happens only thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, students, and community members who stand up and speak out for the freedom to read.

For more information on getting involved with Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read, please see Ideas and Resources. You can also contact the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom at 1-800-545-2433, ext. 4226, or bbw@ala.org.

For media inquiries related to Banned Books Week, please contact: Heather Cho, Media Relations Specialist, 312-280-4020, hcho@ala.org; and Macey Morales, Deputy Director of ALA's Public Awareness Office, 312-280-4393, mmorales@ala.org.

Resources for Women's Health

Women's Health

The nation’s 15th Annual Women's Health & Fitness Day will be held September 28, 2016 at events throughout the U.S., organized by the Health Information Resource Center.

Here in Indiana in 1994, the Indiana State Department of Health created the Women’s Health Committee, comprised of women throughout Indiana representing a variety of women’s health concerns. On Mother’s Day, 1998, Gov. O’Bannon announced the establishment of the Office of Women’s Health (OWH) at the Indiana State Department of Health. A Women’s Health Advisory Board of 38 members was formed. The Board still meets today, bringing diverse representation of women’s health issues throughout the state to the office. The members bring expertise in the following areas: legislative, medical issues, rape and violence prevention, women in prison, cardiology, osteoporosis, oncology, radiology, perinatal care, minority health, and mental health.

You can find Indiana resources on Gender Specific Health through the Indiana Office of Women’s Health and national resources through viewing two useful indexes: Women’s Health A-Z and MedlinePlus Women’s Health. These indexes include: the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Women’s Health topic page, and  the Federal Drug Administration webpage For Women. For data at the national level exclusively on women, see these organizations: National Center for Health Statistics FastStats for Women’s Health, Statistics from WomensHealth.gov, Women’s Health USA 2013 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Fertility of Women in the United States: 2014 from the U.S. Census Bureau. See the World Health Organization’s Global Health Observatory (GHO) data on Women and Health for worldwide data!

ISL Division seeking Public Library Bicentennial Materials

Bicentennial Manuscript Project

The Indiana State Library is developing a Bicentennial manuscript collection, including correspondence, reports, pamphlets, photographs, videos and other documentation. The collection will highlight programs, services and events occurring in every Indiana county. If you are creating bicentennial programs – or a collection of your own, please consider sending us duplicates to join our effort. As part of our manuscript collection, your donated materials will be accessible to all Hoosiers visiting the State Library.

Participation in this unique preservation project only requires sending the previously listed Bicentennial documentation to the Rare Books and Manuscripts Division. Through our collective efforts, we can ensure this important moment in Indiana history will be preserved for future generations.

If you are willing to take part in preserving our Hoosier heritage, please send your items to the following address:

Indiana State Library
Attn: Bethany Fiechter, Rare Books
and Manuscripts Division
315 West Ohio Street
Indianapolis, Indiana
46202

If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to contact Rare Books and Manuscripts Supervisor, Bethany Fiechter, at bfiechter@library.IN.gov or (317) 234-8621.
