Author to Your Community Grants Available

Indiana Humanities invites you to apply to bring an award-winning Indiana author to your community as part of our Novel Conversations Speaker Program. With support from The Glick Fund, a fund of the Central Indiana Community Foundation, we’ll send current and past recipients of the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana Author Award to speak at 20 public libraries, schools, churches, museums, community centers and other nonprofit organizations across the state. Indiana Humanities will pay the speaking fees and provide participating organizations with resources such as a communications toolkit, press release template and event banner. Each participating organization is responsible for working with its selected author to schedule the engagement and cover any travel expenses. The deadline to apply is October 15, 2016, and author events must be completed by June 30, 2017.

For more information, including a list of authors and an online application, visit our website.

Net Literacy Computers are Available!

Computer

Since 2011, the Indiana State Library, in partnership with Net Literacy, has made over 1,200 free, rebuilt computers and monitors available to public and institutional libraries in Indiana.

The Library Development Office is pleased to announce that once again a batch of refurbished desktop computers are now available. These computers are all Dell Optiplex 780s, running Windows 7 Professional and have a minimum of 2GB ram, 40GB or larger hard drives, a DVD Drive, antivirus software, an Ethernet card, and are internet ready. These computers come with all of the required cables and mice. Flat screen monitors are also available.

Quantities are limited and priority will be given to recipients that can arrange to pick up the computers at the Indiana State Library (any time through November 1, 2016). In a few cases, computers may be delivered to requesting libraries, but recipients are strongly encouraged to pick up the computers if possible. Electronics cannot be shipped via InfoExpress.

Please visit Net Literacy’s website http://www.netliteracy.org to learn more about the organization and their efforts to improve Digital Literacy nationwide. The Indiana State Library, in partnership with Net Literacy, is once again making free, rebuilt public access computers available to libraries. These computers are available to any public or institutional library in Indiana (sorry, but schools are not eligible for this service).

If you would like to request computer(s) for your library, please complete this short online questionnaire by clicking here.

Contact Steven Schmidt from the Library Development Office at steschmidt@library.in.gov if you have any questions.

Out of this universe collaboation

telescope

The Mooresville Public Library is celebrating its 2nd year anniversary collaboration with the Link Observatory Space Science Institute. The Link Observatory Space Science Institute offers a monthly educational program at the Library and afterwards a free shuttle takes participants to the Observatory where weather permitting they can view the night sky through the Observatory telescope. The library has reported they have over 200 participants at each monthly program! Check their website for a list of the upcoming program dates by clicking here.

Recently added: Cram Map Company donation

Cram Family

The Indiana State Library has recently received a generous donation from William Douthit.  The donation consists of atlases and globes made by the George F. Cram Company. Cram was a long standing Indianapolis company. To view the full blog article with all the pictures please click here

This donation has added new Cram company catalogs to the Indiana State Library trade catalog collection.  Manufacturing and product catalogs are a great resource for collectors and company researchers.  We are always accepting donations of catalogs from Hoosier manufactures, so keep us in mind as you run across such items!

If you are interesting in donating material to the Manufacturing and product catalogs please contact Monique Howell, mohowell@library.in.gov, 317-234-7270.

Carla Hayden Swearing-In To Be Broadcast on YouTube

Carla D. Hayden will be sworn in as the 14th Librarian of Congress in a historic ceremony in the Thomas Jefferson Building Wednesday, Sept. 14 at noon. The ceremony will be broadcast live on the Library of Congress YouTube channel. The YouTube broadcast will be captioned.

The ceremony marks two milestones: Hayden will become the first woman and the first African-American to serve as Librarian of Congress. She plans to take the oath using a book, drawn from Library collections, with historic connections of its own: the Lincoln Bible.
