Since 2011, the
Indiana State Library, in partnership with Net Literacy, has made over 1,200
free, rebuilt computers and monitors available to public and institutional libraries
in Indiana.
The Library
Development Office is pleased to announce that once again a batch of refurbished
desktop computers are now available. These computers are all Dell Optiplex
780s, running Windows 7 Professional and have a minimum of 2GB ram, 40GB or
larger hard drives, a DVD drive, antivirus software, an Ethernet card, and are
internet ready. These computers come with all of the required cables and mice.
Flat screen monitors are also available.
Quantities are
limited and priority will be given to recipients that can arrange to pick up the
computers at the Indiana State Library (any time through November 1, 2016). In
a few cases, computers may be delivered to requesting libraries, but recipients
are strongly encouraged to pick up the computers if possible. Electronics
cannot be shipped via InfoExpress.
Please visit Net
Literacy’s website http://www.netliteracy.org to learn more about the
organization and their efforts to improve Digital Literacy nationwide. The Indiana State Library, in partnership
with Net Literacy, is once again making free, rebuilt public access computers
available to libraries. These computers are available to any public or
institutional library in Indiana (sorry, but schools are not eligible for
this service).
If you would like
to request computer(s) for your library, please complete this short online questionnaire by clicking here.

WTTV, a CBS affiliate in Indianapolis, recently ran a
segment on the Indiana Voices program
at the Indiana State library. Thanks to a host of volunteers, one full time
staff member, and a grant from the Ruth Lilly Philanthropic Foundation, the
program is able to record books of Indiana interest that are otherwise not
available in an accessible format for patrons of the Indiana Talking Book and Braille
Library to enjoy. The Indiana Talking Book and Braille Library provides
free library service to Indiana residents unable to read standard printed
materials due to a visual or physical disability; there are never any costs
associated with being a patron.

On August 16th, 15 new public library directors attended the New Director Workshop presented by the Indiana State Library’s Library Development Office. The class of 2016, comprised of directors from all corners of the state, left with knowledge, leadership and management information that they can apply to their daily duties.
The workshop was hosted by Karen Ainslie and Jen Clifton and covered policies, board relations, library funding, and laws. New this year, guest presenters were invited to speak on budgeting, additional appropriations, and employment policies. These speakers included Beka Lemons (Huntington City Township Public Library), Sandra Petrie (Noble County Public Library), and Jamie Scott (North Madison County Public Library System). Additionally, participants learned about other Indiana State Library services, including Evergreen, the State Library’s Attorney, Children’s Services, and the Talking Books and Braille Library.
Though it was a packed 7-hour day, the directors had the opportunity to visit with each other and tour the State Library. They each left with new colleagues and the knowledge of where to find the information they need as they grow in their careers.

Thursday, September 15
8:30am to 3:00pm Indiana State Library
Digital preservation combines
policies, strategies and actions to ensure the authenticity, reliability and
long-term accessibility of digital content. The policy statement aims to
provide guidance and authorization for preservation activities. A
written policy statement is a sign that the organization takes the
responsibility to preserve digital material.
This workshop will explore
the importance of having a policy and what should be included in the
document. It will also provide attendees with the opportunity to draft a
policy statement for their own institution with assistance from the
instructors. The workshop is free and open to anyone with an interest in
digital preservation.
Register online by clicking here, Contact Connie Rendfeld crendfeld@library.in.gov if you
have any questions. Participants are eligible for 6 LEUs.
Funding for this workshop is
being provided through a grant from the U. S. Institute of Museum and Library
Services, administered and by the Indiana State Library.
