On August 15th, 2016,
the State Library quietly rolled out the latest thing in resource sharing,
Phase I of SRCS, Indiana’s new Statewide Remote Circulation System. SRCS
allows users to search the combined catalog of over 160 public, academic and
special libraries in Indiana. Authorized users can request select
materials online and have them delivered to their local library where they can
check them out.
Everyone is invited to search this
new super catalog at http://SRCS.Library.in.gov. Users however
must be authorized by their home library in order to place requests in
SRCS.
Over 160 Hoosier libraries are
working together to create a combined statewide catalog in Phase I of SRCS
containing over 30,000,000 items held in the participating Indiana
Libraries. To see a list of the libraries participating in Phase I,
On December 1, 2016, a 60-day
registration window will open for other libraries to join in the second phase
of SRCS.
On
Thursday, October 27th, the State Library will be hosting an all-day
free Human Resources conference taking attendees through the lifecycle of an
employee (job application through separation) from a legal perspective.
Speakers from Ice Miller, LLP will cover laws and best practices with regard to
hiring, wage and hour compliance, medical issues in the work place, employee
performance, and more. This conference is for public library directors,
trustees, human resources professionals, and supervisors. To register for this event click here.
We recently had the opportunity to visit the new home of the Talking Book Repair Group in Fort Wayne. The group, which repairs all of the digital talking book players used by patrons of the Indiana Talking Book and Braille Library, recently found themselves looking for a new home when the old General Electric plant in Fort Wayne closed its doors. The group, which was originally one of many Elfun Societies around the county made of of GE retirees, reached out to the Allen County Public Library about a possible new space for their work. Generously, the library found space in the library services center.
With a grant from the Indiana State Library Foundation, a space was created for the Talking Book Repair Group. The space needed plumbing for cleaning machines and lots of outlets to charge batteries and test players before sending them back out to patrons around the state.
The maintenance of talking book machines is an integral part of our ability to provide the best service possible to our patrons. Already in their new home they have repaired hundreds of players for us and for other Talking Book libraries in the country. We look forward to them repairing thousands more players for us in the future.
Recently a video produced by Access Fort Wayne detailing the Talking Book Repair volunteers’ move from GE to the Allen County Public Library; click here to view the video.
Does your library still use Due
Date stamps? Whether you do or not, please take a moment to complete this quick 4-question survey
to help a public library director who is completing research on the topic. Any
questions may be directed to Cynthia O, Humboldt County Library (Nevada), at Cyndi.O@hcnv.us

Hello, and welcome to the Government Information Minute.
This bi-weekly column is brought to you by the Government Information Librarians at the Indiana State Library. We cover current resources on Govt Info at local, state, national, and international levels. It’s all for you, to keep you updated and well-informed! Suggestions and comments welcome. Check out more Indiana Govt Info updates on Facebook and Twitter.
In this week’s column let’s look at information resources
provided by the Legislative Branch, comprised of the Indiana General Assembly (IGA) and the
Legislative Services Agency (LSA). The LSA provides members of the IGA with
nonpartisan, objective legal support, fiscal analysis, and technology services.
On the main website for the Indiana
General Assembly, you can navigate by using the blue drop-down tabs to link
quickly to information. From the Information tab, you can view current Indiana
House and Indiana Senate district maps, archived videos, and more.
Use the Find Your Legislator
tool to learn about your current State Senator and current State
Representative, including legislation they have sponsored and committees to
which they belong, or just to send them an email.
With the Indiana
Legislator Database you can search and browse over 6,000 entries spanning
200 years of former and current members. Narrow the results as you browse with
parameters such as county, party, years, and committee.
The most recent session information is under the Session
tab. Track down bills by using the Legislation tab and narrow by bill number,
keyword, legislator, or subject. A search using the Bills tab or the Search tab
in the upper right-hand corner of the screen will also provide results
including bills with similar numbers from prior legislative sessions. Material
from 2014 to present is in the main website. Use this link to access Archived IGA content from 1997 to
2013.
Click the Laws tab to link directly to the Indiana
Constitution, Indiana Code, and Acts. If you have a citation to the Indiana
Code, you can also enter the numbers in the upper right-hand corner Code tab to
link to current laws. Try the Advanced
Search option to build a detailed search or narrow your results.
The Publications tab provides access points to both the
Indiana Administrative Code (IAC) and the Indiana Register (IR). You can also
browse from the IAC
Archive page and the IR Archive page.
Various searching options are available on the left side of the page, including
an Advanced Search
option. Final and proposed Rules and Regulations are published in the IR before
being updated in the annual IAC. The IR also includes Executive Orders from the
Governor. The IAC and IR are currently published online only.
While limited prior years of the Indiana Code, IAC, and IR
are available in the online archive, the Indiana State Library has the printed
copies available in our collection, as listed in our Guide to Indiana Government Documents.
August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month. It’s never
too early to plan for a lifetime of health vision. Visit the following websites
to Keep an Eye
on Your Vision Health (CDC) throughout all stages of development. The National Eye Institute maintains an NEI for Kids website for young students
with facts about the eye and visual system; tips about eye first aid and injury
prevention; and eye tricks & optical illusions. You can view the NEI Ask-a-Scientist video
series on topics such as nearsightedness/farsightedness, what eyes do during
sleep, studying human vs animal eyes, and more. Use the CDC website Kids’ Quest: Vision
Impairment to share with children what it’s like not to be able to see. The
American Academy of Ophthalmology provides tips on Eye
Health for Babies, Children, & Teenagers and mentions the importance
of vision screening in detection of childhood eye diseases and conditions. Go
to the Prevent
Blindness website for resources for learning more about your child’s visit to
the eye doctor. You can look up the developmental milestones for vision
yourself using the American Optometric Association’s Good
Vision Throughout Life timeline. If your child has low vision/blindness or
is physically disabled, contact the Indiana State Library’s Talking Book & Braille Library
for information about borrowing braille books, digital audio books, large print
books, audio magazines, and special equipment provided free in patrons’ homes.
