The
Allen County Public Library is pleased to support an IFLA (International
Federation of Library Associations) Genealogy & Local History Preconference
on August 10 – 11, 2016 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The preconference is free to
attend.
This
preconference will feature presentations and discussions on technologies and
strategies for finding, saving and presenting (1) records, (2) family histories
and (3) living memory in the twenty-first century as well as how these
resources are made available worldwide. Come for the first day of interactive

International
organizations will discuss their current efforts, technologies, and resources;
state and regional organizations will demonstrate successful projects; and a
second group of offerings will highlight the importance of story and
interviewing techniques for preserving life stories. A theme woven through this
preconference is recognizing and building virtual information networks to both
preserve and present records, stories, and living memory.

details, registration, lodging information, and travel data, as well as a form
for unconference session suggestions, can be found by clicking here.
Do you live in Indiana? Have you ever resided in Indiana? Do you have family who once made Indiana their home? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you know someone who is a Hoosier.
In celebration of the state’s bicentennial, The Genealogy Center invites Hoosiers to contribute images of “life lived in the small places” as that is what makes, and has made, Indiana great. We are interested in old and new images of daily life and the people of Indiana that showcase Hoosier life. These can include children at play, people at work, people hanging out, sporting events, homes and buildings, and so much more.
The Genealogy Center will collect Who’s a Hoosier? images from December 11, 2015 through December 11, 2016 in honor of Indiana’s 200 years of statehood.
To show your Hoosier pride, please contribute a picture along with a description of the image, detailing Who and What Makes Indiana Great!

The Indiana State House Tour Office, in conjunction with the
Indiana Center for the Book, holds an essay competition to commemorate
Indiana Statehood Day each year. Indiana’s 200th birthday is December 11, 2016.
Winners of the essay contest are honored at a Statehood Day Celebration at one
of four participating locations in downtown Indianapolis. This is a
great opportunity for 4th Grade Classrooms during the first school
semester.
Group entries and individual entries are accepted each year.
Fourth grade teachers are encouraged to use our Lesson Plan and previous
winners to assist in their participation.
For more information, visit the essay website by clicking here.
Our theme this year is Bicentennial and Beyond! How did the
Bicentennial change you? What is next for Indiana?
Please share widely with 4th grade teachers.
Did you know that Indiana’s Child Support program is turning
40? Learn all about the program at our August 26th webinar with the Indiana Child
Support Bureau. Your library will be receiving promotional items from the
bureau soon.
By attending this webinar you will learn the mission and
purpose of the Indiana Title IV-D Child Support Program in conjunction with the
program’s 40th anniversary celebration. We’ll explain what the
program offers and who is eligible, including answers to frequently asked
questions. For example, did you know that the Indiana Child Support
Program collects and distributes to families over $575 million in child support
payments each year? Or that the child support program touches the
lives of approximately 1 in 6 Indiana children? As part of the 40th
anniversary celebration the Indiana Child Support program, which is
administered through the Indiana Child Support Bureau in collaboration with the
county prosecutors, clerks, and courts, will be providing informational
materials to libraries for distribution to the public. This webinar will offer
ideas about how your library can use these materials to spread the word about
the benefits available to Hoosier families through the Indiana Title IV-D Child
Support Program. Family focused. Family centered.
