On Friday, June 10, the Indiana
Library and Historical Board (ILHB) held a public hearing to receive testimony
and vote on the proposed changes to librarian certification. The proposed
changes were unanimously approved by the ILHB. You can read the summary of
changes here and the adopted final rule here.
Please note that the proposed rule is slightly different than the adopted final
rule and both documents are posted. The State Library and ILHB are grateful for
the certification committee’s hard work on these proposed changes, which
provide for more flexibility in librarian certification while maintaining the
integrity of the certification program.
The Indiana Memory
Digital Public Library of America (IMDPLA) Advisory Council is
seeking your input in guiding the development of a suite of services to support
digitization efforts of cultural heritage organizations across Indiana.
This survey will inquire about organizations at all levels of the
digitization process from those just now considering to digitize to those with
robust shops that support institutions beyond their own. We are
interested in knowing what people need but also what people can offer in this
statewide collaborative effort.
Please consider taking a few moments to fill out our survey which can be found by clicking here.

Fourth grade students from around the state were asked to
decorate special, acid-free birthday cards supplied by the library while
briefly explaining “Why do you love Indiana?” and “What does being a Hoosier
mean to you?” The completed collection includes an estimated 10,000 cards and
will be preserved for many generations with other notable collections,
including William Henry Harrison, Abraham Lincoln and Helen Keller
correspondence as well as the Treaty of St. Mary’s.
Rare Books and Manuscripts staff divided the state into five
sections for an inclusive representation of Indiana. The first 500 cards are on
display within the Exhibition Hall and feature several schools:
- Greene County, Bloomfield: Eastern Greene Elementary
- Marion County, Oaklandon: Amy Beverland Elementary
- Whitely County, Columbia City: Mary Raber Elementary
- Elkhart County, Goshen: Prairie View Elementary
- Benton County, Fowler: Sacred Heart School
- LaPorte County, LaPorte: Kingsbury Elementary
- Franklin County, Laurel: Laurel Elementary
- Dearborn County, Aurora: Aurora Elementary
- Jackson County, Freetown: Home School
- Jennings County: Home School
- Allen County, Fort Wayne: Home School
- Hamilton County, Carmel: Mohawk Trails Elementary
- Madison County, Alexandria: Home School
An additional 500 cards will be on display from October-December
2016.
Construction of the Education Center could significantly affect pedestrian traffic in the Exhibition Hall until October 15, 2016. The Center will serve as an active learning site, offering dynamic and participatory exhibits for school groups, families and tours. Barricades and signs will be constructed to protect and redirect patrons due to limited access. We appreciate your patience, understanding and cooperation to help maintain a safe environment during construction. Feel free to contact Connie Bruder, Associate Director of Public Services, prior to your arrival for access information at 317-232-3734 or cbruder@library.in.gov.

Shanika Heyward
Cohort: Cohort 1
Current Employer:
Community Branch Manager, Indianapolis Public Library.
Can you tell us a little bit about your background and what led you to apply for the fellowship?
I've always had a passion to serve and empower others to succeed. I've been working at the Indianapolis Public Library since graduating from High School. I started at the Lawrence Branch as a work-student from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Then, I was promoted to Clerk I, promoted to Clerk II, and finally to Clerk III. Then, I transferred to Collection Management Service Area as Receiving/Processing Clerk III to pursue my undergraduate degree. After graduating with my Bachelor Degree my former Manager, Jeanne Gabonay recommended I attend IU SLIS. I applied and was accepted. A few days after being accepted I received an anonymous email to apply for the ILLID's fellowship.
How did the fellowship help prepare you for your career?
Being a single-parent with limited income and support. The fellowship gave me the support system and the financial resources to succeed. I was able to focus on my studies without worrying about how I was going to pay my bills or purchase textbooks each semester. The camaraderie shared among the fellows, mentors, and Marcia Smith-Woodard provided the wisdom for continual success.
What was your focus while you were working towards your Master's degree?
I wanted to be a Cataloger. I took all advance cataloging related classes. However, at the time IndyPL was not hiring catalogers.
Describe your career path.
I am looking to advancing my career at IndyPL and/or pursing my PhD in the future.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering pursuing a master's degree in library science?
I would tell them not to wait! Apply now! Study-hard! Enjoy the journey!
Outside of your job, what ways do you stay active in the profession?
I serve on numerous boards: The United Northeast Community Development Corporation; our mission is to Empowering, Engaging and Energizing Communities. And, the Forest Manor Multi-Service Center; our mission is to empowers the lives of our neighbors by offering individuals and families the services and support they need to become self-sufficient.
Have you received any professional or personal awards outside of the fellowship?
- United North East Community Development Award 2015 • Forest Manor Community 5th Annual Champions Service Award 2014 • Indianapolis Public Library Foundation- Beth Tindel Award 2014 • Community Faith-based Love Award 2014
