Kids need nature! Children who spend time outdoors are more
creative, healthier, more confident and better problem
solvers.
We want to provide the inspiration for every K-12 student in
Indiana to reconnect to nature, so we are giving Hoosier kids the gift of
nature. The Nature Conservancy is working with the State of Indiana’s Department
of Natural Resources, the Cope Environmental Center and the Indiana Department
of Education to create the first-ever Children of Indiana Nature Park. When the
Park opens as part of Indiana’s Bicentennial, each student will have the
opportunity to claim their personal Nature IN-Deed, with unique geographic
coordinates to their very own spot in the Children of Indiana Nature Park.
Children can visit their land through a click of a mouse on the website, by
going to the Children of Indiana Nature Park, or by visiting a partner nature
center. Deeds will be available for download from the Children of Indiana
Nature Park website www.ilovemyland.org, which will go live on
June 18, 2016.
Libraries interested in the project can help celebrate the gift
that is being given to students by incorporating nature-related themes and
outdoor activities into their programs, including a “Deeding Day” where all
students receive their gift of nature. The Children of Indiana Nature
Park website will include bi-monthly invitations for outdoor fun, where all
youth groups and students in Indiana are invited to participate. For a
flyer with ideas on participating, visit www.ilovemyland.org
and click on the “librarians” hotlink in the text.

ISL’s Professional Development Office is excited to announce that
we have added Samsung Galaxy Nooks to our eReader Kits!
What are these eReader Kits? Supported by an LSTA grant, the kits
are collections of eReaders and tablets that are available for checkout via
your PDO Regional Coordinator. Public and school libraries can book a kit
for up to 3 months, and the Regional Coordinator will deliver them right to
your desk (AND pick them back up)! Your library can use the kits to
train staff or even in a “Petting Zoo” style program for your patrons.
Your Regional Coordinator can offer training to small groups of
your staff on how to use the devices, including downloading materials from
different eBook vendors. We specialize in OverDrive, but can work with you to
offer training on other vendors.
Each kit currently contains 1 iPad, 1 Kindle Fire, 1 Kindle, 1
Surface Pro, and—now—1 Samsung Galaxy Nook! We are thrilled to offer so many
different platforms on which you and your patrons can learn to navigate electronic
materials.
Book a kit today!
To ask questions or to book a kit, locate your Regional
Coordinator by clicking here.

MCLS invites library staff of all types in
Indiana and Michigan to participate in an exciting upcoming professional
development opportunity. We will join together once again, both
physically and virtually to read and discuss the same book. With your
help, we will select a book that is relevant to our profession, provides
thought-provoking ideas for discussion, and has appeal across all types of libraries.
“Last
year library staff said they wanted more discussions across multi-types of
libraries,” said Randy Dykhuis, MCLS Executive Director. “In response, we
launched “Libraries Read: 1 book” in order to create deeper connections among
libraries that span geographic and other boundaries. We will continue the
program in 2016, and hope that by participating, libraries will learn more
about each other and our profession.”
How
this works:
- Go
to the MCLS Facebook event page and vote for one of four selected titles. Voting will remain open
until May 23, 2016.
- MCLS
will tally the votes and announce the selected title on June 1, 2016.
- Once
the title has been selected, MCLS will announce discussions and other
events related to the title that will take place throughout the summer of
2016.
What
you can do to participate:
- Vote
for a title and encourage others in your organization to vote
- Read
the book
- Discuss
the book at your own staff meetings
- Attend
regional discussions and other related events
- Participate
in a live twitter chat about the title

The library will be hosting a summer reading program from May
30th-August 15th. Our theme for elementary and middle school students will be
“On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!” and our theme for young adults will be “Get in
the Game, Read.” Any braille, audio, or large print book borrowed from the
library within the time frame will count toward a participant’s total. In
addition to borrowing physical copies of books, participants can also download
digital audio books from BARD at http://nlsbard.loc.gov, or use the BARD Mobile
app available from the iTunes app store, the Google Play store, or the Amazon
App Store. Patrons with refreshable braille displays can also download braille
books through either the app or the website. To learn more about BARD and BARD
Mobile, please visit in.gov/library/3811.htm.
Prizes will be awarded based on number of books read. We will
again be offering iPod Touches to our top readers. All books borrowed from the
library must be returned before prizes can be awarded. Only books
borrowed or downloaded from the library will count towards a reader’s total.
Talking book patrons between the ages of 4 and 21 are eligible for the summer
reading program. Please direct any questions regarding the summer reading
program to Laura Williams at lawilliams1@library.in.gov or
317-232-0609/1-800-622-4970.
The Indiana State Library will host the Indiana Genealogy and Local History
Fair on Saturday, October 22, 2016, in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana, from
10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Admission is free and the fair is open to the
general public. Fair attendance is usually around 250 to 300 attendees, and
this would be a great time to market your organizations, services, or business
to family history enthusiasts. This year’s
theme is “200 Years of My Indiana Home,” examining the lives and times of Hoosiers
throughout the years and exploring the homes and neighborhoods in which they
lived. Contact genmail@library.in.gov if you have any
registration questions.
Your
Indiana State Library’s contract with LYRASIS will end on June 30, and we will
no longer be able to register for free for classes after that date. You
may register for courses scheduled after June 30 but registrations will be
closed permanently after that date.
LYRASIS
courses on digitization, preservation, and other topics are open to all Indiana
library employees, regardless of certification status or library type.
Upcoming offerings, full schedule, class descriptions, and registration can be found by clicking here.
You
must request a promo code at http://continuinged.isl.in.gov/find-training/lyrasis-classes/
for the classes you want to take. If you are unable to attend the class
on the day of, go ahead and register anyway so they can send you the recording
afterward. Upon completing a post-course survey, you will receive a
certificate to file with your other LEUs.
Does it seem like the lines between the responsibility of
the board and the director are blurry? Sometimes the board and director
are in agreement and other times there is conflict between them. Perhaps it has
been sometime since you’ve had library board training in your library. In
response to this need, we have posted two webinars to the Trustee Information
webpage at http://www.in.gov/library/trustee.htm.
One is a 30 minute overview of the Public Library Trustee duties and
responsibilities. The second video looks at Governance and Management. These
videos are designed so that you can play them at your convenience, whether for
the entire board or for personal review. Enjoy these during a board
meeting or on your own. The Library Development staff is available to answer
your trustee and director questions.
