Did you know that some local libraries organize and host D&D campaigns? Did you know that many libraries enable you to download digital versions of the latest graphic novels for free? Did you know that there are libraries that even loan sewing machines at no cost so that you can make your own amazing cosplay outfit?
If all this is news to you and you are planning on visiting the 2016 Indy PopCon, be sure and visit the Indiana State Library’s booth in the exhibit hall! We will have librarians from various Central Indiana libraries on hand to demonstrate the many ways public libraries support and nurture ‘geek’ culture. Programming will be given on various topics such as tabletop gaming, videogames, comics and graphic novels and makerspaces. There will also be opportunities to participate in various craft projects.
Come see what your local library has to offer!
Indy PopCon is June 17-19 and will be held at the Indiana Convention Center. Tickets and more info are available at https://indypopcon.com/.
Your
Indiana State Library continues to make progress toward amending our public
librarian certification standards. If you have not yet had an opportunity
to review the proposed changes to Rule # 15-446 Librarian Certification,
pleased see the documents posted to http://www.in.gov/library/5412.htm.
We invite your questions and comments at any time during this process and,
particularly, at our upcoming public hearing on the proposed amendments.
The
public hearing of the Indiana Library and Historical Board will begin at 9:30
AM on June 10, 2016, at 315
West Ohio Street, Indianapolis, IN 46202 in Room 401.
The proposed rule will allow
for greater flexibility in continuing education opportunities and will make
eligibility for librarian certification less difficult for our smallest
libraries. The proposed rule does not impose any new costs or financial
burden to libraries or staff.
If you have any question please contact Emily Schaber at the Indiana State Library with any questions or
concerns. She can be reached by phone (800-451-6028) or email
any time.
Midwest Collaborative for Library Services, MCLS is offering up to 15 scholarships to MCLS member libraries in Indiana
to send staff to the Harwood/ALA Public Innovators Lab, October 19-21 2016 in
Atlanta, GA.
These funds are being made available through a grant program established by
the MCLS Board of Trustees from the proceeds of the sale of the former INCOLSA
building.
The Program
The Harwood Public Innovators Lab is a 2.5 day experience to help you and
your organization learn what it means to turn outward – to use the community,
not your conference room, as your reference point for choices and action.
MCLS has been using the tools of the Harwood Institute and sharing them with
libraries since 2013. We are excited to be able to support training for a
cohort of Indiana librarians.
Funding Eligibility
- Applicants must work in an Indiana library that is an
institutional member of MCLS.
- Applicants may be from any type of library; academic,
public, school, institutional, or special.
- A maximum of 2 persons per library will be awarded.
-
Libraries that are
awarded a scholarship for one attendee to the lab will receive $2,245,
and those awarded for two attendees will receive $3,990 to cover tuition
and partial expenses. (Tuition for the Public Innovators Lab is
$1,495/person and $995 for additional persons from the same institution.
Libraries can expect additional expenses to include travel to Atlanta, 3
nights lodging, meals, parking, and incidentals.)
Deadlines
- Interested libraries must complete an application form
by Midnight June 30, 2016.
- We will send notification and mail a check to
scholarship recipients (payable to the Library) by July 14, 2016.
- Recipients will need to register for the Lab, and will
need to make their own travel and hotel reservations as early as feasible
after award notification.
The Application
Questions regarding the scholarship or the Public Innovators Lab for
Libraries should be sent to Michelle Bradley, MCLS Manager, Member Engagement,
at bradleym@mcls.org or call Michelle at 800-530-9019.

Faith Brautigam, Director of the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library
Welcome to a new feature where we will be periodically highlighting library directors from around the state.
Paula Newcom, Professional Development Librarian at the Indiana State Library recently visited the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library and met with Library Director Faith Brautigam. Below is the interview as told by Paula.
Innovative, progressive and enthusiastic are words I would use to describe Faith. I was struck by how much passion she projects as she leads the Kokomo Howard County Public Library into the future with innovative programs and keeping up with ever changing technologies.
Faith Brautigam, Director of the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library
PN: Are you from the area? If not, where are you from originally?
FB: I grew up in a rural part of New York State but have worked in several states. My longest state of residence was Illinois; I lived in the Chicago suburbs for over 20 years.
PN: What inspired you to work in libraries?
FB: I didn't have access to a public library growing up. I am still in love with the very concept of pooling our funds and, as a result, having so many resources available for everyone to share. I was also drawn by the fact that almost everyone who comes to a public library wants to be there.
PN: What is your favorite thing about working for your library?
FB: We come from a position of strength: great staff, a supportive board, and a community that truly values the library. Together, they provide the necessary freedom and tools to innovate.
PN: What is your favorite book?
FB: No true librarian has just one favorite, but I do dearly love “Murder Must Advertise” by Dorothy Sayers.
PN: If you could have dinner with any three famous people in recorded history, who would they be and why?
FB: I would love to meet Ida B Wells, a courageous and forward-thinking role model; C.S. Lewis, whose writing has played a pivotal role in my spiritual life; and Jane Austen who conveys the most biting sarcasm in such polite terms.
PN: What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?
FB: You might find me tracking down bargains, walking my dog, or puttering in the kitchen. Of course, I also could be curled up with a good book.
