Bed Bugs: How to protect your library from infestation (Webinar)

Bed bugs have spread prolifically in recent years, and as public buildings, libraries can be especially vulnerable. The internet is full of suggestions and remedies on how to kill bed bugs, but there are only a few select ways of being sure they have been fully eradicated. In this webinar, you’ll learn about prevention techniques and treatments that are safe for your collections.

This webinar is eligible for 1 Library Education Unit which you will receive via email from the presenter within 30 days.

The Indiana State Library is excited to invite you to a great webinar opportunity with Rebecca Shindel, Conservator of the Martha E. Wright Conservation Lab at the Indiana State Library.  Curious about bed bugs?  Having a problem with bed bugs?  Or just want to be proactive in dealing with bed bugs?  If you answered yes to any or all of these questions then look no further, this is the webinar for you!

Presenters:

Rebecca Shindel is the Conservator of the Martha E. Wright Conservation Lab at the Indiana State Library.

Paula Newcom is the Northeast Regional Coordinator at the Indiana State Library.

Indy’s Carnegie Libraries Named to the National Register of Historic Places

East Washington Branch
East Washington Branch

Two branches of The Indianapolis Public Library that continue to operate as original Carnegie Libraries constructed in the early 1900s have been named to the National Register of Historic Places. Designation on America’s official list of historic places for the East Washington and Spades Park branches results from their nomination by the Indiana Historic Preservation Review Board.

The East Washington Branch, 2822 E. Washington Street, was the first in Indianapolis to be built with funds from a $120,000 grant by the Andrew Carnegie Foundation. Construction began in 1909, with the dedication on November 14, 1911. Currently, the 5,600-square-foot branch is undergoing its first major expansion and renovation since it opened. Improvements which include a new computer lab, elevator access and updated restrooms, will ensure that the historic integrity of the brick and stone building is maintained. Estimated completion is in November, 2016.

Spades Park Branch
Spades Park Branch

The 7,500-square-foot Spades Park Branch, 1801 Nowland Avenue, was constructed in 1912 at the west end of Brookside Park. Built in Italian style of oriental brick and terra cotta with a red tile roof, the branch celebrated 75 years of service with a major renovation in 1987.

Official State of Indiana and National Register Certificates will be presented to Library representatives during special ceremonies at the Indiana State Fair in August, 2016.

The National Register, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016, is the federal government’s official list of prehistoric and historic properties worthy of preservation and protection. In Indiana, this program is administered by the Department of Natural Resources, Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archeology.  Listing in the National Register provides recognition and assists in preserving the nation’s heritage.

For more information on local properties listed as historic sites and structures, visit www.in.gov/dnr/historic.

Be a part of the National READATHON Day, Saturday, May 21

National Readathon Day is a day dedicated to the joy of reading and giving, when readers join together in their local library, school, bookstore, and on social media (#Readathon2016) to read and raise funds in support of literacy. This year, Readathon Day is presented as part of ALA’s Libraries Transform campaign, and will benefit ALA's Every Child Ready to Read initiative, a program that supports the early literacy development of children from birth to age five in libraries across the nation.

Visit the national Readathon page by clicking here to learn more about how to host a party, and to find tips, ideas, and printable materials.

You can also contact Penguin Random House for additional information at: readathon@penguinrandomhouse.com

“Happy Birthday, Indiana” Bicentennial Project Update

Birthday Card May 1

Did you know the Indiana State Library is sending birthday cards to 4th graders? We’re asking students from around the state to decorate special, acid-free cards while briefly explaining “Why do you love Indiana?” and “What does being a Hoosier mean to you?” Our goal is to preserve 10,000 cards for future generations.

To complete our collection, we need participants from the following counties:

Clay
Fayette
Floyd
Jefferson
Randolph
Wabash

We hope you’re willing to take part in this historic project celebrating Indiana’s 200th birthday. If you’d like to participate, please contact Rare Books and Manuscripts Supervisor, Bethany Fiechter, at bfiechter@library.in.gov or (317) 234-8621.
