you’ll learn about prevention techniques and treatments that are safe for your
collections.
This webinar is eligible for 1 Library Education Unit which
you will receive via email from the presenter within 30 days.

East Washington Branch
Two branches of The
Indianapolis Public Library that continue to operate as original Carnegie
Libraries constructed in the early 1900s have been named to the National
Register of Historic Places. Designation on America’s official list of historic
places for the East Washington and Spades Park branches results from their
nomination by the Indiana Historic Preservation Review Board.
The East Washington
Branch, 2822 E. Washington Street, was the first in Indianapolis to be built
with funds from a $120,000 grant by the Andrew Carnegie Foundation.
Construction began in 1909, with the dedication on November 14, 1911.
Currently, the 5,600-square-foot branch is undergoing its first major expansion
and renovation since it opened. Improvements which include a new computer lab,
elevator access and updated restrooms, will ensure that the historic integrity
of the brick and stone building is maintained. Estimated completion is in
November, 2016.
Spades Park Branch
The 7,500-square-foot Spades Park Branch, 1801 Nowland Avenue, was constructed in 1912 at the west end of Brookside Park. Built in Italian style of oriental brick and terra cotta with a red tile roof, the branch celebrated 75 years of service with a major renovation in 1987.
Official State of Indiana and National Register Certificates will be presented to Library representatives during special ceremonies at the Indiana State Fair in August, 2016.
The National Register, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016, is the federal government’s official list of prehistoric and historic properties worthy of preservation and protection. In Indiana, this program is administered by the Department of Natural Resources, Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archeology. Listing in the National Register provides recognition and assists in preserving the nation’s heritage.

National
Readathon Day is a day dedicated to the joy of reading and giving, when readers
join together in their local library, school, bookstore, and on

in support of literacy. This year, Readathon Day is presented as part of
ALA’s Libraries Transform campaign,
and will benefit ALA's Every Child Ready to Read initiative, a program that
supports the early literacy development of children from birth to age five in
libraries across the nation.

Did you know the Indiana State Library is sending birthday cards to 4th graders? We’re asking students from around the state to decorate special, acid-free cards while briefly explaining “Why do you love Indiana?” and “What does being a Hoosier mean to you?” Our goal is to preserve 10,000 cards for future generations.
To complete our collection, we need participants from the following counties:
Clay Fayette Floyd Jefferson Randolph Wabash
We hope you’re willing to take part in this historic project celebrating Indiana’s 200th birthday. If you’d like to participate, please contact Rare Books and Manuscripts Supervisor, Bethany Fiechter, at bfiechter@library.in.gov or (317) 234-8621.
