Indiana Association of Home Educators Convention Recap

Home Educators

The State Library reached out this past weekend, hosting a booth at the 2016 Indiana Association of Home Educators (IAHE) Convention. The convention ran from April 28 to 30 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds with an estimated 4,000 home educators in attendance.  The participants attended the workshops and browsed the exhibition hall looking for ideas, partnerships, and answers to their homeschooling questions.

ISL staff including Daina Bohr, Connie Bruder, Christy Franzman, and Steven Schmidt were on hand to demonstrate the many services available from the State Library, including INSPIRE, Indiana Memory and the Hoosier State Chronicles.  They also passed out bookmarks, magnets and lots and lots of ISL pens.

Indiana's Enabling Act Passes April 1816

Bicentennial

Happy Birthday, Indiana! Two hundred years ago, Indiana’s Enabling Act was passed by Indiana’s House of Representatives and approved by its Senate. The Act was signed by then U.S. President James Madison, Jr. on April 19. The Enabling Act provided for the election of delegates to the constitutional convention on May 13. It allowed the state to form its constitution and state government, and to choose a name. It also defined geographic boundaries, assigned voting rights, and established state taxes. Thanks to our friends at the Indiana Historical Bureau, we can read about this and other Indiana Documents Leading to Statehood on the IHB website. The Territorial Papers which contain the original document of this Act are held at the Indiana State Archives. For more information about Indiana’s 200th birthday, see the website of the Indiana Bicentennial Commission
