The Indiana bicentennial celebrating Indiana’s 200th birthday
has brought renewed interest in Indiana authors. Last year the Lilly
Library announced the acquisition of J. Greg Perkins 19-volume Darkness Before
Mourning series acquisition - one of the largest bodies of fiction ever written.
Click
here to read the entire announcement.
About the series:
Indiana-born author J. Greg Perkins debuted the Darkness Before
Mourning series with The Announcers, the
first volume of the series in 2015. The novel depicts the life and
culture of Indiana from the perspective of a young boy who loses his father to
cancer in the 1950's, and subsequently loses his faith. This 19 volume series
continues following the protagonist as he matures against the backdrop of the
American Midwest from the 1950s through 2010.
Appearance Information
Dr. Perkins is giving two readings on the IU campus on March 31
& April 1st, and is available for additional appearances at Indiana
libraries on March 30th, April 2nd and 4th. He has also
has scheduled a trip to Indiana in late September 2016 in conjunction with the
publication of the second volume of the Darkness Before Mourning series, titled
Harvest of Ashes. He will be available for appearances during this visit September 16th thru the 30th.

This one-day
conference will explore and expand knowledge of women’s contributions to
Indiana through their labor via speakers, presentations, and panel discussions.
The theme, “Hoosier Women at Work” is broadly defined but not limited to the
following topics: volunteering for public welfare, contributing to Indiana’s
agricultural heritage, caring for home and family, and wage earning
occupations. Conference keynote speaker, Dr. Nancy Gabin, Associate Professor
and Director of Undergraduate Studies at Purdue University, will provide an
overview and remarks at the luncheon.

Now that Indiana State Library
policy allows Library Education Units for foreign language acquisition classes,
we are thrilled to announce a new program titled Spanish Language Community of
Interest for Librarians! If you want to learn Spanish, or if you already speak
Spanish, we welcome you! Bienvenidos!
This will be a very different
kind of learning experience and not at all like attending a workshop or a
webinar. We will be meeting and communicating virtually to learn and
practice speaking in library contexts. We will also be sharing resources
and getting to know the services and programs other libraries offer around the
state. We will use Google
Groups to chat and post resources. We will meet virtually using Zoom to practice our conversational language
skills.
If you are interested in this 8-week
pilot program,
please contact Emily Schaber by
April 1. If you have a Gmail address you want to use, please include
that in your email to Emily. She will add you to the Google Group and
share additional details with you regarding LEUs and other items. You can contact Emily Schaber through email
or by phone at: 317-234-6217.

The origins of National
Women’s History Month go back to March 8, 1857, when women from New York
City factories staged a protest over working conditions. International Women’s
Day was first observed in 1909, but it wasn’t until 1981 that Congress
established National Women’s History Week to be commemorated the second week of
March. In 1987, Congress expanded the week to a month. Every year since,
Congress has passed a resolution for Women’s History Month, and the President
has issued a proclamation. The Law Library of Congress has compiled guides to
commemorative observations, including a comprehensive inventory of the Public
Laws, Presidential Proclamations and congressional resolutions related to
Women’s History Month. Learn about upcoming events
across Indiana on the Indiana
Commission for Women website. Click here to view a
sampling of the material related to women’s history available from the
Library of the Congress and other partner agencies. Explore interactive maps and photographs through Places
Where Women Made History, an itinerary of
historic properties listed in the National Register.
The Indiana Commission for Women
provides links to several women’s history websites and information on programs within
Indiana and nationally on its Women’s
History website. Also in Indiana, the Women’s History Trail, a collaborative program with the Indiana Women’s History
Association, plans to highlight and preserve historical sites related to
women’s history in Indiana. For more information, see Indiana sites along the
trail here and Indiana’s Historical Markers on Women across the state. For Women’s History resources, see the Bibliography of
Indiana Women's History Books and Articles compiled by Mary Owen, the Women in Indiana books available at the Historical Bureau bookshop, and the
Indiana Women’s History
Exhibits online.
The Census Bureau provides updated numbers on women’s
representation in select occupations. Women comprised 47.4 percent of the civilian
labor force in 2014, according to the 2014 American Community Survey 1-Year
estimates. In social science, 63% of the scientists are female. The field of
Pharmacy has grown a whopping 40% in 40 years, from 12.1% of American
pharmacists who were female in 1970 to 52.6% American pharmacists who were
female in 2010, while Accounting has also grown enormously – from 12.1% female
in 1970 to 60% female in 2010.
