IHCDA COVID-19 update: A message from Jake

Pictured from left to right are renderings of the Heart of Owen County, Monticello Riverwalk Plaza and Starke County Veterans Memorial Plaza projects.

In 2017 we launched our CreatINg Places program in partnership with Patronicity. This placemaking program employs a donation and reward-based method of crowdfunding called “crowdgranting”.

Placemaking is about fostering places where people want to live, work and play. This type of place-based community revitalization is a powerful tool to achieve IHCDA’s Vision of “an Indiana with a sustainable quality of life for all Hoosiers in the community of their choice.”

I would like to highlight today three CreatINg Places campaigns that recently reached their crowdfunding goals:

  • Heart of Owen County – In Owen County, local business, culture, and adventure come together to create their unique community. To help further enhance these local amenities, the Spencer-Owen Economic Development Corporation launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for a public restroom facility and mural. With support of more than 500 patrons, they raised more than $28,000, successfully surpassing their $25,000 goal.
  • Monticello Riverwalk Plaza – The Twin Lakes are a wonderful asset in Monticello, Indiana. So, to better connect their city to the river, the Monticello Redevelopment Commission launched the Monticello Riverwalk Plaza with the goal of raising $50,000. Thanks to the support of more than 400 patrons, they raised over $75,000.
  • Starke County Veterans Memorial Plaza – Starke County has a proud history of servicemen and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. The Starke County Park board felt it was time to give these brave individuals the honor and respect they deserve. With the help of more than 150 patrons, they raised more than $65,000, far surpassing their $50,000 crowdfunding goal.

These projects are just a few examples of how communities have continued to move forward over the past few months.

I want to thank Bridget Anderson, who is the Indiana Director for Patronicity, as well as Ryan Hamlett who is IHCDA’s Placemaking and Environmental Review Manager for their work and leadership on the CreatINg Places program.

In total, the CreatINg Places program has allowed us to support close to 100 successful campaigns. Together these projects have generated more than $4 million in support from more than 20,000 individuals and organizations. We have provided just over $3.3 million in matching funds.
