Finance department at Indianapolis-based Johnson Controls certified for Trade Adjustment Assistance

INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 27, 2018) – On Sept. 4, 2018, the United States Department of Labor (USDOL) issued a positive determination for TAA petition TA-W-93,937, permitting eligible workers of Johnson Controls, Inc., in the Finance department in Indianapolis to apply for consideration of benefits under Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA).

TAA offers a variety of benefits and services to support workers in their search for reemployment, including:

  • Training: Full-time or part-time occupational skills training, on-the-job training, apprenticeship training and customized training may be available for eligible participants. If eligible, the training benefit covers the cost of tuition, books and required materials for an approved training plan.
  • Trade Readjustment Allowances (TRA): Income support benefits may be available while participating in full-time training.
  • Job Search Allowances: If a worker is required to search for work outside of the normal commuting area (Indiana defines a regular commuting area as 25 miles), the benefit reimburses 90 percent of pre-approved expenses incurred while attending a job search activity (e.g. interview, employer testing, etc.).
  • Relocation Allowances: If a worker successfully obtains employment outside of the normal commuting area (see above) and must relocate, the benefit reimburses 90 percent of pre-approved expenses incurred to move the participant, family and household goods plus a one-time lump sum payment of $1,250.
  • Reemployment Trade Adjustment Assistance (RTAA): This is a wage subsidy program for workers over the age of 50 who accept reemployment at a lower wage. RTAA provides 50 percent of the difference between the separation wage and reemployment wage up to $10,000 or two years, whichever occurs first.
  • Health Coverage Tax Credit (HCTC): If eligible, HCTC may pay a portion of a participant’s health insurance premiums to qualified providers, or it may be taken as a tax credit. HCTC is administered by the IRS. Additional information may be found at http://www.irs.gov/HCTC.

Workers who were or will be laid off between June 28, 2017, and Sept. 4, 2020, must register with a WorkOne office in order to be considered for potential TAA benefits and services. Workers are encouraged to contact their local WorkOne Career Center as soon as possible to ensure that TAA benefit deadlines are met.
