Grants Awarded to Support Expansion of Indiana Apprenticeship Programs

DWD will provide $1,179,000 in grants to eight existing and emerging apprenticeship programs across Indiana. The programs were selected based on their plans to engage industry and other partners to expand apprenticeships to non-traditional sectors and underserved populations, identify ways to promote and advance greater inclusion and diversity in apprenticeships and/or create or expand pre-apprenticeship programs for both youth and adults.

“Congratulations to these eight grant recipients that will cultivate apprenticeship programs in growing non-traditional fields and encourage diversity in apprenticeship programs across the state,” said DWD Commissioner Steven J. Braun. “The expansion of apprenticeship opportunities is essential to ensuring Indiana's incumbent workforce possesses in-demand skills in order to fill the one million jobs expected to become available over the next decade.”

In 2016, Indiana had over 800 registered apprenticeship programs serving more than 12,000 Hoosiers. The Apprenticeship Expansion Grant program is designed to grow existing apprenticeship opportunities and develop new programs.

Apprenticeship Expansion Grant recipients are expected to implement and administer funded programs within the next year. Visit www.in.gov/dwd/apprenticeship.htm for apprenticeship resources, grant guidelines and more information.

Program Growth on Display at VEX IQ Elementary School Championship

Story courtesy of TechPoint Foundation for Youth

On February 25th, more than 95 robotics teams from 38 cities around Indiana competed in the Indiana VEX IQ Elementary State Championship hosted by the State Robotics Initiative. The competition took place at the Campus Center at IUPUI with over 1,500 spectators in attendance.

The State Robotics Initiative (SRI) launched in 2016 as an expansion of the successful IndyVRC program begun in 2013 by then Mayor Greg Ballard. A partnership between the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, TechPoint Foundation for Youth, Project Lead The Way (PLTW), and Ivy Tech Community College drives the initiative with the goal of bringing robotics to every school in the state of Indiana, beginning with our youngest Hoosiers.

With significant seed funding secured from Guggenheim Life and Annuity and support from long-time robotics funders USA Funds, Roche Diagnostics and Eli Lilly and Company, the number of elementary VEX IQ robotics teams in Indiana grew 600% during the 2016-17 school year. In 2016, 443 VEX IQ robotics teams were started in 198 cities and towns across Indiana as a result of grants provided by the State Robotics Initiative. Participating schools received robotics kits, registration fees, teacher professional development, and PLTW classroom activities to incorporate robotics during the school day...read more

State Extends FAFSA Deadline to April 15

The Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education extended the state’s March 10th financial aid filing deadline to April 15th this year. This action was in response to recent issues with a federal data retrieval tool that complicated the process for families attempting to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Beyond determining eligibility for state and federal financial aid, colleges use information from the FAFSA to determine their scholarship awards. Filing the FAFSA is particularly important for Indiana’s 21st Century Scholars who will not receive their scholarship that pays for up to four years of college tuition without completing the FAFSA.

The fastest and easiest way to file the FAFSA is online at fafsa.gov.
