INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) today announced an estimated $14 million investment in street resurfacing and curb and sidewalk repairs in downtown Indianapolis. INDOT worked with the City of Indianapolis Department of Public Works to identify local road segments that experienced increased wear during the closures of Interstate 65 and Interstate 70 for reconstruction of the North Split interchange.
Contractor crews will complete work to improve conditions on various local street segments adjacent to the North Split project area beginning this summer and continuing through the 2024 construction season.
 The North Split interchange recently reopened to traffic following a nearly two-year closure for construction that began in June 2021.
The $350 million North Split redesign and reconstruction replaced more than 40 bridges which had reached the end of their service life, replaced deteriorated pavement with next-generation quiet concrete pavement, and eliminated dangerous weaving patterns from the old design that resulted in an average of 300 crashes annually.
In addition to local street repairs, the North Split project will enhance nearby neighborhoods by improving bicycle and pedestrian connectivity through wider sidewalks and modern lighting, promote neighborhood identity with visual enhancements, and create an urban forest with the planting of thousands of trees throughout the project area. Prior to the start of construction, INDOT invested $4 million to repair and upgrade traffic signals on local streets to improve traffic flow in the downtown area.
