Lane closures begin Thursday on S.R. 156 bridge over Plum Creek in Switzerland County
SWITZERLAND COUNTY, Ind.— Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Sunesis Construction plans to begin scour protection work this week on S.R. 156 in Switzerland County. On or after Thursday, Oct. 1, lane closures with flagging will be in place over Plum Creek (east of Vevay) as crews begin clearing trees, followed by the installation of approximately 200 tons of rip rap to act as erosion control for the west abutment of the bridge.
Bridge scour occurs when moving water removes sediment from around the bridge, creating holes that can compromise structural integrity. Placing rip rap is one of many ways a bridge can be protected from scour.
The $130,000 contract was awarded in August and is expected to be complete by mid-November, weather permitting. Motorists are reminded to slow down, watch for stopped traffic, and drive distraction-free through all work zones.
