State Road 26 Historic Bridge Preservation Project Starts After Memorial Day in Howard County
Construction contractors plan to begin work after Memorial Day to restore and preserve the historic State Road 26 bridge over Mud Creek in southeastern Howard County. A specific closure date will be announced as the Memorial Day holiday approaches.
The bridge, located nearly three miles east of State Road 213, will be closed for up to 30 days while Primco, Inc. restores steel and concrete bridge components, applies a modified concrete overlay to the deck, and paints the steel truss. Primco’s bid of $484,862 was the lowest of three submitted for the project.
During the closure, a signed detour will direct state highway traffic north to U.S. 35/State Road 22/State Road 19 via State Road 13 and State Road 213. All work on the project is expected to be complete before the end of July.
The steel pony truss bridge, built in 1947, was determined eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places, suitable for preservation and an excellent example of this type of bridge.
