Lt. Governor Holcomb Awards $47 Million in Road and Bridge Funds to 102 Central Indiana Communities

CARMEL, Ind. – Lieutenant Governor Eric Holcomb joined INDOT officials today to announce that 102 Central Indiana cities, towns, and counties are receiving a combined $47 million to improve local roads and bridges through the State’s Community Crossings matching grant fund. Lt. Governor Holcomb and INDOT officials made the announcement at separate check presentations to Avon Town Manager Tom Klein and Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard, Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness, Noblesville Mayor John Ditslear, and Westfield Mayor Andy Cook.

“Few states have invested more in infrastructure over the last decade than Indiana and these Community Crossings grants are another way we demonstrate why Indiana is the Crossroads of America,” said Lt. Governor Eric Holcomb. “Communities in Central Indiana are showing a strong commitment to modernizing infrastructure by pursuing these grants and we are looking forward to seeing the projects that these funds will help complete.”

The Town of Avon is receiving $1 million in matching funds to support the construction of a bridge, roundabout and trail on Avon Avenue. The City of Carmel is receiving $1 million in matching funds to support the construction of a roundabout and additional road improvements at 4th Street and Rangeline Road. The City of Fishers is receiving $1 million to modernize 116th Street between Eller Road and Interstate 69. Noblesville is being awarded nearly $498,000 dollars for multiple road projects. Westfield is using $1 million in matching funds toward reconstruction of Tomlinson Road between Blackburn Road and 203rd Street and other city street improvements.

“The Avon Avenue bridge, roundabout and trail project will eliminate delays by the trains which will save our residents time and money. The new trail and sidewalk over the bridge will make Avon a more bikeable and walkable community,” said Avon Town Manager Tom Klein. “The matching funds provided by the State through Community Crossings make major infrastructure projects like this more affordable for taxpayers and frees up other funds for us to make other additional improvements to our infrastructure in the next few years.”

“Investing in a smart, modern transportation network makes Carmel a more competitive place to live and work,” said Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard. “This project is a prime example, and the State’s financial support through Community Crossings helps us take this project from conceptual to completion more quickly than otherwise possible.”

The local road and bridge matching grant fund was created by the Indiana General Assembly and signed into law by Governor Mike Pence in March 2016. The grant program provides approximately $160 million in funding this year available to all Indiana cities, towns and counties on a 50/50 matching basis.

Projects that are eligible for funding through Community Crossings include road resurfacing, bridge rehabilitation, road reconstruction, resurfacing, and Americans with Disabilities Act compliance in connection with road projects. Material costs for chip sealing and crack filling operations are also eligible for funds.

A complete list of Central Indiana cities, towns, and counties receiving matching funds through Community Crossings for the calendar year 2016 call for projects is online at http://www.in.gov/indot/3569.htm.

Tomorrow, INDOT officials will make stops in Clark County and Evansville to feature projects receiving funding in those communities and announce all Southern Indiana communities that will receive matching funds. State officials will make funding presentations in Northern Indiana on Wednesday.
