U.S. 31 Lane Restrictions to Set Temporary Concrete Barrier
Rieth-Riley Construction plans to restrict traffic lanes on U.S. 31 at State Road 28 on Wednesday, March 30 to set temporary concrete barrier wall along the median and shoulders of the highway.
Motorists should plan for daytime left-lane restrictions on northbound and southbound U.S. 31 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. The right lane of southbound U.S. 31 may also be restricted, but at least one lane will remain open in each direction at all times.
The speed limit through the work zone is reduced to 50 mph on U.S. 31 and 45 mph on State Road 28. For the safety of workers and motorists, law enforcement is patrolling the work zone.
Tips for driving safely in work zones
- Stay alert and minimize distractions: Don’t text, talk or adjust controls.
- Expect the unexpected: Normal speed limits may be reduced, traffic lanes may be changed, and workers may be nearby.
- Slow down: Speeding is the major cause of work zone crashes.
- Don’t tailgate: The most common work zone crash is the rear-end collision.
- Pay attention to signs: Warning signs help keep you and other drivers safe.
- Schedule enough time to drive safely: Expect delays and leave early.
What to expect ahead
Rieth-Riley Construction, INDOT's contractor for the $10.8
million interchange project, will begin building up earth embankments for the
new bridge approaches and interchange ramps. Crews will also begin
construction of the new bridge abutments and center pier.
State Road 28 is tentatively scheduled to close for up to 120
days beginning in June. A specific date will be announced in the near
future.
During the closure of State Road 28, a signed detour will direct
highway traffic north to State Road 26 via State Road 29 and State Road 19.
Local motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and seek their best
alternate routes. To see a map of state highway work zones and road
closures, go to indot.carsprogram.org.
At the same time as the State Road 28 closure, U.S. 31 will be
reduced to one lane in each direction and direct access to and from State Road
28 will be unavailable.
All new traffic configurations, including the new roundabout
interchange and State Road 28 access bridged over U.S. 31, are expected to open
in November.
