Tire Safety -- Know Your Car Next to the brakes, the tires are the most important safety devices on your car
Tread Check the tread of your tires once a month, because worn tires are deadly on wet roads. When grooves are not deep enough to channel water from beneath the tread, it can cause the vehicle to hydroplane. Hydroplaning is the sliding uncontrollably on the wet surface of a road in a vehicle. Wet-weather braking and snow traction also decrease as tires wear.
Air
Pressure Pounds
per square inch (PSI) is the measurement of the amount of air in a tire. Each
brand or size of tire has a unique PSI, so it is important to find out what each
brand of tire holds. This vital information is in the owner’s manual. Check PSI
often and, if it is low, add air until it reaches the correct PSI.
Under-inflation compromises cornering, braking and stability, and it can also
affect fuel economy and tire life. Further worse, improper tire pressure can
lead to tire failure or a serious accident.
