Helpful Resources

Protect Yourself from Identity Theft

The IRS and Security Summit partners “Protect Your Clients/Protect Yourself” campaign recently covered simple actions that tax professionals can take to better protect their clients and themselves from identity theft.

Create a security plan – The Written Information Security Plan, or WISP, is a 28-page, easy-to-understand document developed by and for tax and industry professionals to keep customer and business information safe and secure.

Sign up clients for Identity Protection PINs – IP PINs are now offered to all taxpayers who can verify their identities online, on the phone with an IRS employee after filing a Form 15227 or in person. To obtain an IP PIN, use IRS online tool Get an IP PIN.

Phishing, Spear phishing and Whaling  – Beware of phishing scams designed to trick taxpayers into disclosing personal information such as passwords, bank account numbers, credit card numbers or Social Security numbers.

Know the tell-tale signs of identity theft – Watch out for multiple clients suddenly receiving suspicious IRS letters requesting confirmation that they filed a tax return; receipt of e-file acknowledgements for more tax returns than you filed; or when your computer cursors begin to move seemingly on their own.

Help clients protect themselves whether working from home or traveling – Share these cyber-smart tactics with your clients for awareness when conducting online business for personal, business or financial affairs.
