Requesting an Extension
of Time to File

Customers have the option to request an extension of time to file an individual income tax return prior to the April 18 tax deadline. Doing so extends the due date to Nov. 14, 2022. Filing for an extension does not extend the deadline for paying any tax due. Interest is due on all amounts paid after the original return filing due date. Customers can avoid a penalty by paying 90% of the amount due by April 18 and the remainder by Nov. 14.

For specifics on the three ways to request an extension, check out our Tax Talk Blog.

Setting Up Payment Plans
in INTIME

DOR offers several payment plan options for individual income tax customers who owe more than $100 and business tax customers who owe more than $500. Once a tax return has been processed with a balance due (verify balance via INTIME), a payment plan can be set up by signing up or logging in to INTIME.

Customers do NOT have to wait for DOR to send a bill and this can be done prior to a payment deadline. In fact, if payments are made prior to a due date, penalties and interest may be reduced on the balance due.

Instructions on how to set up a payment plan in INTIME are available here.

How to Respond to a Letter, Notice or Bill in INTIME

DOR is pleased to see that customers are using the correspondence functionality in INTIME. However, there’s a difference between responding to a notice from DOR and sending a secure message to DOR. Customers who receive a letter, notice or bill from DOR should:

  • Respond by going to the “All Actions” tab in INTIME to locate the “Letters” panel.
  • Click the “Respond to letter, notice or bill” option.

This selection allows customers to view and respond to letters received from DOR with the option to upload supporting documentation while keeping all related correspondence together.

Choosing this option is the most efficient way for DOR to associate the message that is being sent with the letter or notice that was issued.

More information is available in the INTIME User Guide for Individual Income Tax Customers.

Barcode Issue on 2021 Form IT-40: Schedule 5

DOR wants tax practitioners to be aware of a barcode issue on an earlier version of the 2021 Form IT-40: Schedule 5 posted on the agency’s website. The issue was identified and corrected prior to the date DOR began accepting 2021 tax returns. However, we are receiving a significant number of returns filed with the outdated version. Use of the outdated form could cause processing delays. Please make sure you are using current versions of Indiana tax forms by downloading them from DOR’s website for each use.

Businesses Required to File When Reporting Zero Dollars

A Failure to File Return Notice is sent to business customers when DOR’s required tax return for the tax period and tax types indicated on the notice is not received.

Businesses who have no tax to report during a taxable period must file a return reporting zero dollars of activity or tax collected. This can be done by creating an INTIME account using the Letter ID on the notice they received. Tax amounts may be paid after logging in to INTIME. If the tax return listed on the notice has already been filed, business customers can submit an INTIME message with their confirmation number and date of submission. The INTIME User Guide for Business Customers is available to help walk them through the process.

If a business is no longer operating, the owner is required to submit an Indiana Business Tax Closure Request (Form BC-100) to DOR in one of two ways: 1) Use INTIME to submit Form BC-100 by selecting the “Close Business tax account” option on the “Tax account registration” panel, located under the “All Actions” tab or 2) download Form BC-100 and instructions from the Business Tax Forms page and mail or fax to DOR.

If the tax account isn’t closed via INTIME or the Form BC-100 isn’t filed, DOR may continue to send bills for estimated taxes. Late filed returns are subject to a penalty of up to 10%, and a minimum penalty of $5.
