Appointments Needed to Open New IRP and IFTA Accounts

To ensure customers have ample time to complete their transactions, any customers opening a new IRP or IFTA account must have an appointment. Appointments for other MCS transactions are encouraged.

You can make an appointment online or by calling 317-615-7200, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. EST. Appointments, including those for service providers, are limited to one person or one account per scheduled appointment.

After you make an appointment, a member of the MCS staff will email you with additional details and instructions. Look for an email from dor.in.gov and add it to your safe-sender list. Make sure you check your spam folder if you do not see the email in your inbox.

Don’t forget that most motor carrier-related transactions can be completed online. Customers are encouraged to visit the MCS customer service center only for transactions that cannot be efficiently performed via telephone or online such as:

  • Payments for transactions that could not be made over the telephone or online; and
  • Picking up plates and decals that cannot otherwise be mailed.

For your safety, self-service kiosks located within the Motor Carrier Service (MCS) customer service center remain unavailable.

Click here for directions and additional information, including safety guidelines.

After completing your transaction online or in person, let us know how we did by taking our MCS Customer Feedback survey.

New OS/OW Superload Escort Guidelines

The Indiana State Police (ISP) recently announced new requirements for OS/OW escorts. A police escort is not required for vehicles under 250,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) if:

  1. The permitted route is interstate-only; and
  2. There are no bridge slowdowns anywhere along the permitted route.

For more information on these new “superload” escorts and requirements, visit ISP’s website or see Form M-204S, Special Provisions for Vehicle Permitting.

Continued Improvements to IRP Online Transactions

MCS customers have seen DOR’s commitment to continuous improvement as we began rolling out updates to the International Registration Plan (IRP) system just over a year ago. A new update went live on Oct.18, 2020.

Customers will now need to acknowledge that any data contained in the transaction summary, including all vehicle information, is accurate. A check box for the acknowledgement will appear on the pre-billing summary page. This box must be checked before a bill can be generated. Don’t forget to include enough time to review the transaction summary thoroughly when planning to renew or perform other IRP transactions.

Time to Renew IRP Registrations for Jan 1.

Customers may now renew IRP registration(s) valid for the period beginning on Jan. 1, 2021, through our online system.

MCS discontinued sending IRP renewal notices through the U.S. Postal Service. Instead, MCS will email a reminder to renew to the address listed in the customer’s account profile at motorcarrier.dor.in.gov.

Check your address and update it if needed so you don’t miss this reminder.
