Trucks Don’t Stop During an Emergency: How MCS Kept Everyone Rolling

During an emergency, some things just can't stop; one of those is motor carrier traffic on Indiana roadways. The ventilators, masks and other supplies hospitals need, as well as the food and supplies all of us consume, travel into and through Indiana, after all, we are the crossroads of America.

Due to COVID-19, DOR's MCS department had to gear up to face its biggest challenge to date – keeping the engine running on essential services while closing the “One-Stop-Shop” customer service center located on the west side of Indianapolis.

All DOR staff work on a secured network and receive intensive training on cybersecurity and data protection throughout the year.

How was MCS able to speed the transition? We refused to put on the brakes. We look forward to serving you online, by telephone or by appointment at the Motor Carrier Services Center in Indianapolis.

DOR’s Helping Hoosiers Initiative Helps Motor Carriers

Effective March 31, 2020, in support of Gov. Eric Holcomb’s Executive Order 20-02 declaring a public health disaster emergency in Indiana due to COVID-19, DOR has waived several Motor Carrier Services requirements. Click here for details. Look for more COVID-19 specific to the motor carrier industry on DOR’s Motor Carrier Services web page.

Special Permit for Transporting COVID-19 Emergency Preparedness & Relief Supplies/Services

On April 9, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) issued a revised letter serving as a special overweight vehicle permit in response to the need for emergency preparedness and relief supplies/services as a result of COVID-19. On, April 21, agricultural products intended for emergency response or relief were added to this revised permit. This permit was extended and is currently not valid after June 4.

Electronic renewal reminders have several benefits over mailed notices, including:

  • Reduced risk of lost or misdirected mail;
  • The ability to renew registrations immediately through a link in the reminder; and
  • Cost savings to Hoosier taxpayers.

Customers who have questions or need assistance can call Motor Carrier Services at (317) 615-7340, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., EST.

Moving Like the Wind: DOR MCS Team Sets Plan to Get Superload to Redkey, IN

The MCS Oversize/Overweight (OSW) team is helping to coordinate over 200 separate several “superloads” with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and the Indiana State Police (ISP) for a massive wind farm in Redkey, Ind. The wind turbine blades are over 200 feet long; nearly four times the minimum length needed for and OSW permit!

It’s not easy; a route used for one day may not be the same route to take the next.

Please join us in thanking this small team for their big efforts. More information is available in our DOR Tax Talk blog. Subscribe today!
