Summer is flying by (how is it August 1 tomorrow?) and for DOR, that means we’re gearing up for our first Project NextDOR launch on September 3, which we look forward to discussing with Hoosiers who stop by our booth in the Expo Hall at the Indiana State Fair.

Speaking of the Indiana State Fair, this will be DOR’s second year on-site in the Expo Hall and we are pleased to feature a larger booth space closer to our other state agency friends. Look for our smiling faces to share the latest DOR programs, customer-centric initiatives, learn more about Project NextDOR, and of course, you will get the opportunity to take your turn in the “cash cage” (it’s not real money, folks). We’ll be there all 17 days, so please stop by and meet fellow Hoosiers serving the great State of Indiana as you cool off in the Expo Hall.

While Hoosiers are enjoying the fair and interacting with some of our team members, we will be incredibly busy behind the scenes as we close in on the first roll-out of our modernized tax system featuring a 24/7 customer-facing, online portal. Project NextDOR, the four-year modernization of Indiana’s tax processing system, is an agency-wide, transformational journey to bring the Department of Revenue into the 21st century with a fully integrated system featuring a host of online services that are not offered today. Our first roll-out occurs on September 3 and our team has been working diligently to ensure everything is ready to go. For more about Project NextDOR, including a list of the various tax types contained within each of the four roll-outs, check out the article in this issue or visit our website at dor.in.gov.

One final item of note: we are incredibly proud to be named one of the IndyStar’s Top Workplaces for 2019. This was part of our lofty vision put in place just two years ago - to be recognized as a great place to work - and through tireless work, commitment to the culture of the agency, and a customer-focused attitude fueled by continuous improvement, we’ve made it. I should note, this is the first time a state government agency has ever received this award, which is a fact we do not take lightly. As always, we encourage you to continue to submit ideas to help us improve. We’ll never be perfect, but we are always looking to make things better.

Tax Schools Starting in One Month

DOR representatives will speak at Indiana University’s Tax Practitioner Institute and Purdue University’s Income Tax School this fall. These tax schools give updates on changes to Indiana tax laws, forms, agency processes and other issues. These presentations are especially designed for tax and legal professionals. All participants receive a copy of the Indiana Tax Chapter and earn continuing education credits for attending. Seminars are offered at several locations throughout Indiana. For current registration information, please see the Tax School information page on our website.

DOR's Schedule C Desk Audit Program

DOR’s Schedule C program is meant to identify and correct filing errors, educate customers and improve Schedule C compliance.

As part of DOR’s individual tax return data verification, Schedule C reviews are conducted to assess the validity of the data and prevent overstated or fraudulent refunds from being issued.

Results have been positive as the program has identified filers who inflate income to receive the maximum earned income credit and/or inaccurately report business deductions. Read more….

Marketplace Facilitators in Indiana

Starting on July 1, 2019, “marketplace facilitators” are now required to register and collect Indiana sales tax on behalf of their sellers for transactions into Indiana.

In some cases, marketplace facilitators may also need to collect County Innkeepers Tax (CIT) and Food and Beverage (FAB) taxes. Visit DOR’s marketplace facilitator website for more information.

Don't miss the chance to win prizes in our Cash Cage or talk with experienced DOR professionals.
